  • Playing time in CIT

I understand the desire to win, but I have to say I've always been a little disappointed in the way playing time is distributed during these low level tournaments. To me, the best use of tournaments like these is to help prepare your younger players for next season. I wasn't happy to see Nate Wells log zero minutes and Shayok and Crawford combine for just 5 total. Even Prosser only got 12 minutes. I guess I just feel like these guys are going to have to make much bigger contributions next year, and now would be the perfect time to up their minutes and see what happens. If we lose, so be it, because these tournaments really don't matter at the end of the day.

Bradley is in this tournament to win. Win then you get to host more games. More games = more money. The CIT/CBI are not developmental tournaments. They are division one basketball tournaments.

I agree ,I thought we were in this Tourney to win and you have to do what you have to do to win. Not sure those 4 names getting playing time gives you much opportunity to do so.Who knows next year may not be in the future for some of those 4. Guess we wait and see.

        I disagree.

Winning it would be fun, but what would it really accomplish? I don't think it really equals more money, considering that large buy-in required to play in the tournament. I could be wrong, but I don't think 2000 fans per home game is going to really result in much revenue. It's not going to help you in recruiting because recruits won't care and it's not getting you any national TV exposure.

To me, the only reason these tournaments are worth playing in is to help prepare for next season.

I kind of wanted 1 win for the seniors, and they did that last game!
I would like for this next game to have a different focus though - to give players like KB, SS, JC, and NW more PT. If we happen to advance past the next game, then play the rest to win it all, but give those guys who look to be in the mix for next season some PT too.

Geno said he was going to use this extra practice time to get Walt and other retiring players more practice reps with Fields and Grier (because they spent most of the season on the scout team)

I think that practice time would help more than just more game time.

There is little data to suggest a high correlation between slight increase in playing time impacting performance in the second year. While most data around this relates to the "sophomore leap" and that a player with a certain ranking is no more likely to perform better if they go from 15 minutes to starter, than if they go from 5 minutes to starter, I think it makes some sense. Shayok and Prosser have plenty of experience in their career that a few extra minutes isn't going to change anything. Draw your own conclusions about Crawford.

Heck, I know everyone can find isolated examples, but look at someone like Kelly Olynyk, he redshirted as a junior after backup duty for two years and came back an All-American.

              I'd rather:

              1) Try to win games, build a culture of winning
              2) Reward the seniors for their dedication.

I agree with this as well. As long as you win, you get more practice time, and if you run Fields and Grier on the 1st team, that's a bigger benefit.

as previously posted these tournaments prep you for next year in practice. In practice all of next years players should be playing together and getting reps.

Come game time, however, you play with the best 5 that give you the best chance to win, and if thats still the seniors, they play.

I'm interested to know which one of these four listed is going to make a much bigger contribution next year?

Good point . There are at least two who possibly may not even be a Brave next year. That's just my opinion. It makes no sense to me why you would accept a bid just to play kids who didn't log much playing time. They are getting to practice. If they were ready for minutes they'd be getting them. When you lace em up and put on that uniform for crying out loud you do so to WIN.

In it to win it! Play the guys who give you the best chance to win.

I do think its more of a reward for the senior players than its to try out guys returning next season.

I'm not saying any of them will. But if BU is going to continue to improve upon this year, at least one of them is going to have to. With no incoming post players signed (at least not yet) Prosser and Wells are your centers. One of them has to step it up.

But Prosser has a ton of experience, getting him 25 minutes instead of 15 isn't going to impact anything.
