  • NIT selections: Indiana State gets NIT bid; UNI does not

    32 team NIT field-

Indiana State is a 6 seed and plays at Iowa on Wednesday, March 20..
Northern Iowa, with an RPI of 83, gets screwed and is left to play in the CIT. They have accepted a CIT bid.

    NIT Bracket-

Also, Illinois State (RPI 120) did not get an NIT bid, and has decided not to seek or accept a bid to the CBI or CIT. Their season officially is over. Got to be a disappointment for the team picked #2 in the MVC preseason poll.

Here's the full CBI bracket - no Valley teams - no ISU

Illinois State refuses to play in the CBI or CIT. By losing 5 of their last 7 games, ISU decided that their season was too disappointing to continue playing in a "lower-tier tourney".

I think it might have been a good way to showcase a couple of their seniors who clearly have pro aspirations, Jackie Carmichael and Tyler Brown. But first year coach Dan Muller decided otherwise.-

Who should UNI have gotten in ahead of???? I have a hard time finding anyone they should have replaced except possibly...Indiana State! Ohio would be next closest, but still would probably take them over UNI.

UNI had an RPI of 83. That is better than 11 of the 32 teams included in the NIT. 8 teams were winners of their conference regular season, so they were guaranteed bids regardless of how poor their RPI was.
But there were 4 other teams that got at-large bids that had worse RPI's than UNI-

                      Florida State- RPI 84
                      Washington- RPI 89
                      Providence- RPI 90
                      St. John's- RPI 96

And St. Joseph's got a bid with an RPI of 82, only 1 place better than UNI, yet their SOS is much lower than UNI's.

It could be argued that UNI should have been included ahead of a couple of those teams, but especially St. John's, who lost 7 of their last 8 games, and very few quality wins.

I agree that you could have made a case for UNI ahead of St. John's. It probably didn't hurt St. John's case that they are in NYC, where the NIT Final 4 is held.

And that they have a high profile coach.

Because St. John's is a 5 seed, it is unlikely they will host a game. And though it would be a nice draw if they made it to the NIT Final 4 in Madison Square Garden, that seems highly unlikely.
