  • BIZARRE ENDING, 11 FT's in 5 seconds, Richmond robbed

Just saw the replay of the end of the Richmond-Charlotte game...
39 minutes and 55 seconds into the game Richmond led 63-60...and then the refs took over...

With 5 seconds left in the game and Richmond ahead by THREE - they foul Charlotte in the backcourt to make sure nobody hits a three-pointer.
Then the Charlotte player is shooting 1-and-1, and the first FT bounces on the rim then goes in.
As the ball is bouncing on the rim, two players bang under the rim & the ref calls the Richmond player on the foul but claims it was way too aggressive and assesses it is a technical foul so 2 more shots & the ball out of bounds on top of the 1-and-1...
So they make all four FT to take a 64-63 lead BUT since it was a technical - which it shouldn't have been because that's the same stupid mistake the refs made on the Jackie Carmichael play - it's a FLAGRANT 1 OR FLAGRANT 2 but it is still a personal foul not a technical.

SO - hold on - there's still plenty more...
Richmond now has to foul on the inbounds play because now they're down 1 with still just 5 seconds ledt - so they instantly foul the Charlotte guy in the backcourt after inbounding, but after the whistle blows - the fouled player flings the ball as if he was shooting.
SERIOUSLY - it should just be another common foul but the refs then call it a foul IN THE ACT OF SHOOTING! - why would the guy shoot from the back court while his team was ahead with 5 seconds left?? And of course he only faked like he was shooting to play along with this horrific charade the refs were playing...

Anyway - they grant 3 FT's to Charlotte - then the Richmond coach goes goes crazy - after all, I would too....so guess what??
They hang 2 more technicals on the Richmond coach plus ejection - just like *****-ic refs did to Versace in Hawaii...
so by the time Charlotte is done with all their gifts - they hit 8 of 11 completely BOGUS free throws - and win the game 68-63!!!

    I kid you not......

I just went to espn.com and I think this is it. I haven't checked it out yet though.

Pierria Henry hit eight free throws in the final five seconds to lead Charlotte past Richmond, 68-63, in a stunning turn of events.

Sorry - my link does not have action - just post-game discussion with Digger and the gang.
They are pretty much bashing the officiating though, so must have been bad.

            the Charlotte coach says...
"You couldn??™t make that one up if you wanted to make a movie out of it.."
..but most older Bradley fans remember an ending like that in 1981-82...

Eighth-seeded UR fell 68-63 to ninth-seeded Charlotte at Barclays Center on Thursday afternoon as the Spiders were assessed three technical fouls in the final 4.7 seconds.

Check my twitter feed. My last tweet has the video: http://www.twitter.com/BPtheBrave

Makes an interesting argument for the age-old debate of whether or not you should foul when up 3 late in the game. Bet no one ever thought fouling could result in 11 free throws. Worst case scenario if you just softly defend the last possession is overtime.

FWIW, I don't know how the officials could not have called something for the shove on the first free throw attempt. Pretty sure whether it's a T or flagrant, Charlotte gets the ball back, but either way, they go up 1. I haven't really watched beyond that point, but do want to watch again to view the meltdown.

Gotta tell you, I think the 3 FT's for the foul after the T is the correct call, too. The kid was loading up the half-court shot before the foul was called. I am not sure about the whole T vs. Flagrant, but in my opinion, Richmond brain-cramped this one away.

Agreed, Bobby....and yet Digger Phelps says the ref should not work again this year?!

No, Perrie was definitely not loading up for the shot before the foul.
He was fouled - then he had the presence of mind to fling the ball erratically toward the hoop after getting hit as if he were actually intending to shoot. I don't think anyone actually thought he was going to be rewarded 3 shots for that, which is why Mooney went ballistic after the call was made. Yeah, he lost his cool and should have refrained, but in the heat of the moment it's easier said that done.

The refs let this one slip away - not that Richmond didn't play a part in it, but the refs decided the outcome of this one, and seemed to let their emotions get in the way.
