  • Technicals

I watched the MAAC Championship game last night and the game had two interesting technical fouls...
Iona beat Manhattan and gets the automatic bid and the final score was Iona 60 - Manhattan 57....
so I can't say for certain that either technical would have made a difference but I thought personally both calls were silly and were real overreaches by the referees...

The first call was on the Manhattan head coach for leaving the coaches box - we've seen this call because Geno got hit with a similar call.
In this case, tho the call seemed to take momentum away from Manhattan and may have ultimately affected the outcome.

But the other technical was downright ridiculous...and it happened with 0.1 second left on the clock...and actually allowed Manhattan to score 5 points and narrow the final margin in just the final one-tenth of a second!
with the score 60-52 and Iona 100% certain they were going to win - the Manhattan player throws in a desperation 3-pointer that doesn't have a chance of affecting the outcome - only the final score....so the game goes from 60-52 to 60-55 but the clock stops and there's still one tiny tick left - 0.1 seconds......and with 0.1 sec left the Iona bench players began celebrating - apparently thinking the game was over...they took a step or two forward and then were whistled by one of the refs for leaving the bench area.
Seriously there was only 1/10th of a second left - and the ref still wanted to be the center of attention...wow

The resulting two Manhattan free throws then make the final score 60-57...but here's where it gets interesting...
the betting line on this game was -3 or -4 according to some of the online betting services.....and there's currently some interesting talk on some of the sports betting message boards about how this finish is very suspicious.
....... so in that final 1/10th second the ref who made that silly technical call sent the game from not covering the point spread - to covering -- causing some people to think this final action by the ref might have been an act to help assure the outcome for certain people.

That is why I would not last as a coach. I wouild not be able to keep my mouth shut after a blatantly stupid call. Joe Stowell got a few technicals. I remember one game he argued with the ref and then got another technical but he stayed right there nose to nose with that ref and told him what he thought before he left the game. I think sometimes the coach needs to show support for his team and take one for the Gipper. Al McQuire sometimes would do that to get his team fired up. And it usually did
