Incidently, I am an Engineering graduate of BU and I do not feel that a masters in "Engineering Management" is a very important or necessary field of study as opposed to graduate degrees in pure Engineering. I base this on many years of business experience in Engineering and Management.
Blinders?? You are advocating a degree to support recruiting... I am not anti-athletic in any fashion. I purchased my first season full price season tickets at age 24, missed one home basketball game my entire time at BU, and generally am a sports addict - so if you need to resort to personal stereotypes to support your argument, maybe it isn't entirely valid.

Anyway, what I am is pro-student. Often times we overlook the student in favor of the student athlete. Spending even more money on athletics to revive a major that has been deemed non-viable and is generally considered of low academic rigor doesn't help BU or the student population at large. There is a distinct overabundance of PE majors as it stands in today's economy, so what are the academic reasons for BU to add this major? My point in all this is that athletics are great, and BU should support them, but only so far as they improve the reputation and regard for the university. And they should never be at the expense of the student body at large.

By the way I think your opinion on engineering management may be a little skewed, some fairly respectable schools seem to think it's a worthwhile endeavor, employers too - http://www.mempc.org/

Wizard I'm on your side as I think most of the posters on here are. AMCK does make a few good points but I think he's missing the most important one. He seems to think that creating a P.E. major would be just for athletes. Don't think that's the case at all. Would we benefit from it? Yes I do think we would . We would get kids in here like DeAron Willliams who was a P.E. major at Wisconsin and had very few credits that would transfer but more importantly we would be able to provide schools P.E. teachers and coaches. Whats wrong with that concept?

If you are going to have a sports program then you definitely need a P.E program, there are a lot of students that major in P.E. that are not on the athletic teams, this in no way would diminish the Bradley name as far as Academics goes as Bradley was a top notch school a long time ago when they had this major and will continue to be one if they reinstated it, sounds like someone has a hidden agenda.

Couldn't agree more. Think all but one are on the same page. BRING BACK THE P.E. MAJOR.

Haha, hidden agenda against PE majors? Are you kidding me? Please, humor me, elaborate on my scheme, expose me to the world.

Obviously you think you are better then anyone with a P.E. degree as you think your engineering degree makes you better, well no one really cares.

What? What are you talking about? I never even came close to mentioning anything remotely in that manner. Clearly someone has some hurt feelings here.

My points have all been in the same vein and focused on the fact that I think the decisions on what majors to offer should be independent of athletics. I have never said that one is better than the other, and the only thing I have said against even adding PE is that the market is over-saturated with PE majors as it is. This is the exact same stance I take on adding a Law school which the President is considering.

I'm not sure why you are so personally offended by this as this isn't my intention, but making wild accusations as to my motives, "hidden agenda," and supposed belief of superiority aren't justified - at the end of the day all I'm saying is that athletics are tangential to academics. If it makes sense to reinstate the PE program from an academic perspective, great, do it. But the fact we removed the program leads me to believe it does not and I don't think the need to help recruit an occasional player is enough to tip the balance, or even factor in the decision.

As an edit, I looked for other similar schools (Small, private) that want to be competitive in basketball - Xavier, Creighton, SLU, Marquette do not appear to have a program, Butler, Gonzaga and Dayton do, but it wasn't easy to see if any team members were majoring in it.

AMCK---Your motives and thoughts may be as pure as the new driven snow we have today and in some ways may be partially correct, however---Your sintax and words leave one to suspect that you may be anti- athletic and intellectually arrogant.

Sorry if that's the case. I have absolutely nothing against athletics, the fact the I'm on this board regularly and have some large number of posts (not sure what), I think would be evidence of that. When people seem to be offended I try to be as clear and precise as possible and I guess that means I'm arrogant? I will admit I almost always am on the side that athletics should not be Bradley's primary focus, however for many alum and friends of the university that is their only remaining connection to the university and that could make it seem that I'm "anti-athletic" somehow, but it isn't the case at all. My point all along remains - the PE major should be evaluated as the Geology major/minor was, the proposed Law School is undergoing, and any other addition or subtraction should (IMO) - from a purely academic stance, and that Athletic team recruiting shouldn't be taken into account.

Your points are noted but I think your in the minority here but that's ok. your entitled to your opinion. That's what we do here.

It was the administration that did not want the PE curriculum. And from what I hear, no administration since then, including the present, was/is in favor of bringing it back.

Basically, I have heard it said that PE curricula is considered the domain of the state schools that educate the masses.

But athletics is one of the most public uses of precision timepieces. That should be an important consideration to a Horology school

I understand what your saying, just not agreeing with the admin. I think it puts us at a serious disadvantage with prospective athletes that want to get into coaching or students that take that route in our JC's then can't get in our school because they lack the hrs. Again DeAron Williams come to mind right off the top of my head and I'm sure there are others that we don't even know about.

Selfishly, as a fan of the basketball program, I'd love for Bradley to offer a PE major. That being said, I can't understand why any general student would pay $35,000 per year to major in PE at Bradley (or any other primary or secondary education major for that matter). Illinois State and Eastern Illinois have the top 2 placement rates for education majors in the state, and EIU literally costs 1/2 of what it costs to attend Bradley.

I totally agree. Although I would recommend Bradley to any prospective student, I think everyone needs to assess the cost of their education versus the field they're entering. Paying back $100k in student loans on a $35k/yr salary seems crazy to me.
