  • Doug McDermott's chances of getting drafted in 1st round

Many people say that Doug McDermott will leave Creighton and go to the NBA after this season, his junior year. I do not believe he will. I think he'll stay for his senior season at Creighton.

    What does everyone else think?
Is McDermott a 1st round pick? A lottery pick?

Here are a few of the numerous mock 2013 NBA drafts, and some might be surprised to find that most do not project McDermott as a 1st round pick-

    NBADraft.net-
http://nbadraft.net/2013mock_draft - McDermott is projected as the #26 pick in the 1st round. Jackie Carmichael is not listed.
In fact, Carmichael is not even listed in their Top 100 prospects-
Specializing in drafts with top players on the NBA horizon, player profiles, scouting reports, rankings and prospective international recruits.

    DraftExpress.com-
http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-mock-draft/2013/ - McDermott is projected as the 17th pick in the 2nd round (the 47th pick overall). Interestingly, Jackie Carmichael is projected higher than McDermott, at the 4th pick of the 2nd round (34th pick overall).

    Hoopsworld.com-
http://www.hoopsworld.com/2013-full-...k-draft-22413/ - McDermott is projected as pick #45 (15th pick of the 2nd round), and Carmichael is projected as the #50 pick (20th pick of the 2nd round).

    CBSSports.com-
http://www.cbssports.com/nba/draft/mock-draft - McDermott is projected as the 31st overall pick (the 1st pick of the 2nd round), and Carmichael is the #46 pick overall (16th pick of the 2nd round).

Many other mock drafts on the internet list only their projection for the 1st round, and most do not include McDermott in the 1st round.

And numerous Bleacher Reports articles were also reviewed, and McDermott does not make the 1st round in any of those I have found.

If McDermott does not receive assurances he will be picked in the 1st round, there is no way he is entering the draft. 2nd round contracts do not include any guaranteed money.

those guys at nbadraft.net have Rodney Williams at #36 - I would be astounded if Williams gets drafted behind McDermott...

btw - there was an NBA scout sitting in the seat right in front of me at the last game watching McDermott... I could see much of what he was writing down...
and could overhear much of what he was saying while he chatted with the people around him..
he was impressed with McDermott's ability to score inside but simply cannot see McDermott as an inside player at the next level where almost every team has powerful 7-footers...
but he expressed concern with ball handling & moving without the ball & foot speed. He'd probably be pegged as a small forward - and would need to be quick enough & athletic enough to play head to head with LeBron, Luol Deng, Carmelo, Durant, or remember Adam Morrison?

I would just find it hard to believe that a guy would stay if he's finished among the Top 5 players in the nation in back-to-back seasons.
He took that step this season to refine his game and surely his stock has risen.

As a Creighton fan, I would absolutely love if he stays, but just don't see the incentive to stay another season except to possibly make it farther in the NCAA tourney, which is a lot of commitment and a full season to wait and see if it will happen.

But who really knows what little McD is thinking.

a new mock after this weekend's action oddly has Jackie Carmichael dropping all the way to #56 (near the end of the 2nd round) -
he'd be backup for Blake Griffin on the Clips! But they think McDermott will stay in school and do not list him

Well my fantasy team depends on Doug staying in college and CU staying in the Valley 1 more year.... so I want him to stay

Doug McDermett chances in the NBA 1st round

IMO, DM will not get drafted in the 1st round. He scores inside and gets a lot of garbage points off good assists. He won't be able to do this in the NBA. Also quick NBS small forwards will shut him down almost 100%.

If he stays at Creighton and develops a really good outside shot, he might have a chance next year.

He already shoots 50% from three point range, how much better would you like his shot to get?

all those shots are only worth 2 pts in the NBA

Shooting threes in the NBA is a great deal different than the types of stand-still, open 3-point semi-jump shots McDermott gets now. He would need to markedly improve his ball handling skills and be able to create his own perimeter shots. And that is not just my opinion, the NBA scouts are the ones with the biggest questions about his ability to play in the NBA. Just who would he guard? He couldn't guard any NBA 2-guards in the NBA, nor any 3's. That has always been Kyle Korver's problem, and he is much quicker and more mobile than McDermott. And there is no way he can play the 4 in the NBA.

McDermott should test the NBA waters by putting his name into the draft (and he can still withdraw it before the deadline and retain his college eligibility if he doesn't hire an agent). Then he can attend NBA camps and tryouts and play against real NBA players and see how his skills stack up. The NBA people will tell him frankly whether he is a 1st round pick or not. My guess is he'll be back next year.

I think his game is comparable to Wally Szczerbiak. I don't think he will be drafted as high as this ex Miami of Ohio star (6th overall) but I think they have similar games. Dougie moves very well without the ball and can shoot off the drible, the pass, or screens. Good left hand. Will rebound a little too. Defense may be his worst skill but in the NBA...... I could see him popping later in the 1st round unless he puts the word out he has little interest in signing.

My point was that he shoots pretty darn well from 20 feet.

McDermott still has not made his decision nor any announcement despite that it is erroneously being reported some places that he has.......
one radio talk show also is saying he is holding a press conference Wednesday but there's no official word on that

by contrast - this writer says he will stay and will be the Big East Preseason Conference Player of the Year

Doug McDermott will announce his decision whether to leave or stay at Creighton at a press conference at 2:00 today.

                              My prediction- he'll stay
