  • Doug Elgin quote regarding Creighton leaving the MVC

Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin addressed rumors that Crighton may be leaving...

First - there has been no decision nor announcement that Creighton is leaving...

"...it is all still speculation at this point and there is absolutely nothing official to report about any school leaving."

    and then....here are the...
"Financial penalties if a Valley school decides to leave...

??” If Creighton should decide to depart the Missouri Valley Conference there are potential financial hits the school will suffer.
    Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin (said)...
.."there are specific provisions in place in the conference's bylaws that explain the financial penalties.
    Those penalties are as follows:

    24+ months notice, no penalty

12-23 months, a school forfeits half of its annual distribution (the distribution varies from year to year, but has been averaging about $280,000 per school per year)

0-12 months, the school forfeits all of its distribution."

    The penalties are laughable.

I think Creighton is gone, and likely so is Doug.

if Doug McDermott fails to get a solid guarantee of getting drafted in the 1st Rd - maybe he'd stay to get some east coast press in the new Big East??

The "annual distribution" might be a lot more this year if we get more than one team that can win a few games...

..and just speculating - but if Creighton leaves - who do we ask to be the Valley's 10th member?
      Oral Roberts? Western Kentucky? WIU??

WKU plays BCS football, so they're a no. I wouldn't hate ORU, but my preference would be Belmont. They'd be a great fit in the MVC with schools like Bradley and Drake.

WIU would be an interesting geographical pick. We could now have two I-74 rivalries which would be pretty cool! And WIU under Coach Mo would definitely at least remain competitive for the time being. I'm just worried that one he is gone if they would settle back to mediocrity like an Evansville or Drake in an already weakened MVC. But I admit this is not a team I would have thought of, but it certainly would cut down on travel costs for everyone, and would be a perfect natural rivalry.

ORU would be a good team as they are always pretty good, and could make that step up into the next level without a huge effort. It would be interesting to see if they could become a perennial Valley power, or if they become the next Evansville, a team that started out strong when they moved into the Valley, but became more mediocre with time.

WKU would be good from a geographical standpoint, but their program has been down a bit recently. But still one to consider, though I would like Valparaiso or Loyola/UIC myself. Valpo for obvious reasons in that they are almost always very good and close to Chicago, or Loyola and/or UIC because they give us a recruiting foothold in the Chicago market, and the Valley big time exposure there. However, the quality of Valley basketball probably drops big time by adding one or both of those two Chicago teams into the conference. But at least I could get to see Bradley a couple of times a year up here!

Unfortunately, the best teams to go after are on the fringes of the Valley geographical footprint. One of the Dakota St. schools in the Summit, or maybe someone from CUSA might be a better option quality wise. I wouldn't mind seeing Tulsa back in the Valley, but they haven't played at the level they were at in the Valley or WAC in years. But they are usually just good enough to be very competitive, and they could step back up to the elite portion of the Valley.

Oral Roberts or Belmont are ideal for the MVC from the Bradley lens.

Exactly, I think monthly B1G distributions dwarf that annual MVC distribution.

Today's Creighton showcase and fan base lets us witness how an institution's progress leads to brand recognition and the potential step up to $$$$ and institution success. The C7 will be huge for Creighton. If FOX wants them...We'll know Tuesday.

I'm telling you all...Wichita State is next to blow out of here. The only surprise to me is that they haven't gone already...

Then, D. Elgin's laid back approach to this will be his downfall. A much weaker conference is set already. It's about the $$$.

Why would WSU want to stick around?

Better yet, why would BU want to stick around when the only likeness they have to most of the other MVC members is location? Academics - NOPE, Private Schools - NOPE, Football - NOPE, Endowment - NOPE, Student Profile - NOPE....

prob so - but many schools play FB & basketball in different conferences including 5 MVC schools and two of the schools in WKU's conference..

We would survive just like when St.Louis, Cincinnati, Memphis State, Louisville, Tulsa, left at one or another. There are plenty of quality schools that I believe would make a nice add on to the Valley. But add them only if they equal or improve the quality of what you have now. I will leave it up to the powers to be to figure out the best way as long as they strive to improve. What i dont like hearing is talk of not being able to keep up with the big boys so why try. One has to try! Strive to be better.

They probably are, but seriously, does anyone think the Big East would take us? That's highly doubtful to say the least. The A-10 we may have a shot at, or perhaps we can be part of a newly formed second tier private school conference that could be at least somewhat competitive with the bigger conferences. Or just stay in the Valley and try to get quality teams here.

Of the 5 MVC schools who play football in a different conference, none of them play BCS football.

Is St. Louis U part of the C7? Maybe they could replace Creighton if they bail on the MVC. Didn't Majerus say a couple of years ago that he wanted to join the MVC?

I have not been following the subject too closely so pardon me if I ask some stupid questions.

Well, since Majerus is dead, I'm guessing his opinion carries even less water now. I think they'll be in the C7, and if not, they'll stick in the A-10.

Well, if the Valley brings in St. Louis and W. Illinois, they will have Jim Crews and Jim Molinari back.
