Why not give the home crowd something to remember that they were there for his final college game to win the conference with a 40 point effort?
Doug is in the game to score - plain and simple, and if he's got a shot to score and it's not in the final couple minutes with a commanding lead, why not?
And why jump on a poster who is just trying to point out that it was the best Valley performance since Hawkins?

I am not knocking Doug - just noting he's in the game at a time a lot of coaches might have their stars out...and not worry about stats..
I also noted that the guys on Creighton kept feeding passes to McDermott late in the game for shots in the first few seconds of the shot clock even tho the situation pretty much demanded eating the clock...
I am discussing the game and the situation - maybe you should try the same instead of trying to draw some conclusion from what someone else says to get upset about

Originally posted by BUSongwriter View PostI saw the whole game, and had no problem with McDermott being in as long as he was. He was incredible....again....and I was pulling for him to get 40 at the end. Until the final two minutes, the game really wasn't decided. He was having a great game on ESPN2 and in what may be his last home game. Ride it, enjoy it. The Oladipos and Plumlees and Trey Burkes are on national TV night after night after night after night getting promoted and oogled over. 40 gets more publicity than 39.
Doug had his day today. He was great. The best I've seen in the Valley in a long time, probably since Hersey. I hope he has a great NCAA tourney....after we thump the Jays in Arch Madness.

Doug McDermott is a great player and he has NBA scouts at all his games....he doesn't need a few extra baskets at the end of games to make his point..
ESPN has a nice article on him and points out that the 2014 draft is likely to be much deeper, and if he's still a late 1st rounder even after a season like this then he won't go higher next year.
He can least afford if Creighton goes to the Big East and drops to the lower half of the conference or he gets injury

he's got only one game out of his last 18 games where he's scored in double digits...
averaging only about 4 ppg in that span since the Christmas holidays

I still have the USA Today from when Hawk scored 63 in Detroit in 1988. BU won that game against a team with a 5-19 record by 15 points. Creighton won yesterday in the conference championship by 12.
Here is part of the story:
"I knew how many I had at the half (35)," said Hawkins. "The guys on the bench kept count. The last time I looked over they held up '61'. I thought, 'That many?' And they kept saying to give me the ball."
Hawkins PLAYED 39 MINUTES and made 21 of 28 shots.
Hawkins, who entered the game as the leading Division I scorer with a 34.4 average, also set school and Missouri Valley Conference records with his 63-point effort. The previous conference record swas 62 points, set in 1960 by Cincinnati's Oscar Robertson....

It was Creighton's day, and McDermott's day. I'm fine with that. I really saw nothing wrong with it, and only good for the MVC.Yajusneverno!

that's funny, I am glad you picked that game because I am quite familiar with it and...that game was NOT a blowout...it was a lot closer than the final indicates - since down the stretch they fouled and Hersey went 18-20 from the line...
Detroit - as you know - also had a guy go for almost 50 - and Detroit was racking up points by the bunches - finishing with 107...
reading the Detroit Daily News account - which is still searchable - you'll see Stan Albeck was quite concerned because Bradley simply could NOT get stops...Detroit was scoring on every possession...
I did not see that happen yesterday --
Hersey had WAY more of his points in the first half and pretty much only free throws in the final minutes of the game..
McDermott by stark contrast scored almost 60% of his points in the 2nd half - and in the final 4 minutes or so, after which Creighton never lost their double digit+ lead...McDermott score 13 pts, including a couple 3-pointers and some were less than 10 seconds into the shot clock..just sayin'.......
SERIOUSLY - why even take another shot when you're UP 16 POINTS and the clock is UNDER a minute!!! WSU had already subbed in their bench..

I am not bugged - just not all caught up in the thrill of it such that I can't see the obvious - and it was not me who brought up Hersey..
if I happen to think they did a little stat-padding - then why does that bug someone who might think otherwise?
BTW Hersey still got only 2 pts when he launched those long ones - for half his career.
