  • Illini's Mychal Henry transferring?

rumor in the early stages & no confirmation that Mycheal Henry is interested in leaving Illinois and maybe transfer to Bradley?
..maybe even one other guy on their roster who doesn't get playing time - maybe the tie in could be the Chin connection..
one of the Illini message boards mentions it but I heard it from a big time Illini guy..

    Ford connection maybe?

possibly - without knowing anything else - would it surprise anyone if a couple players who were getting essentially zero playing time were interested in looking elsewhere because they fear they only have 2 years left and this coach did not recruit them....
the connections with the current coaches (via Chicago AAU or via Dustin Ford) could make them check out BU.

the downside I see is that once again we will use our only open scholarships for this fall on two guys who wouldn't likely be eligible for another year and a half...
all that optimistic talk of landing a couple more "difference makers" for this fall would end as neither of these guys would help us 'til 2014 and by then Walt Lemon, Prosser, & Tyshon are gone

Mike Shaw might be a real solid MVC power forward.

Are you hearing the same rumors I am hearing?

there was also some discussion that in the game vs. Michigan Henry gave some good minutes in the 1st half then when inserted in the 2nd half he "tried to play hero ball" and launched a couple bad threes right away - and got immediately sat down...
That's when the transferring rumors started - you can see some twitter chatter...

              I hear things.

It wouldn't help with depth for next year obviously, but he could slide in right behind Pickett and be a two year starter. I think this only happens if someone currently on scholarship leaves, as they need 2013-2014 players with the two open scholarships.

I agree we could only take in transfers if people leave. We need to fill the 2 remaining spots with people who can play next year. If one leaves who would you rather have Shaw or Henry?

I have liked Myke Henry from day 1....

He is basically Tyshon's size but more mobile and IMO is the best pure shooter on Illinois....(yes DJ is a good shooter too.)

The fact that we have 0 shooters makes me want him... although I don't like how he would have to sit a year.

I would much rather have Henry. However if we end up having 4 openings in the spring, I wouldn't mind both.

I think it could be a both or neither situation though.

We have to have a Center who can play next year.

                      this is an interesting comment...
                      I would ask...

-who do you have in mind - are there are satisfactory prospects either leaning towards BU or waiting at the door?
..I know of none that are high on our list plus of the available juco big men yet uncommitted - none that I know of is rated even in the top 100 juco prospects
Thus if we grab one now for fall of 2013 we'd likely be getting someone raw or a project...

-are you assuming the four players who have played center for us who are returning (Tyshon, Wells, Shayok, & Prosser) are inadequate even with an extra year under their belts?
...the only name being thrown out is Tommy Hamilton and I can't imagine he's more ready than anyone we already have...

                      - and if we still don't have an adequate center after three recruiting classes then any suggestions??

BTW - I have also heard that Groce really likes Rayvonte Rice and already has him working with starters in practice - which must be sending a signal to guys like Henry...

I am thinking of a JUCO who can rebound play D and get some time. I don't think we have enough players now. Not even close. I don't expect Top 100, I would take them.

I have no names. Might not be possible, but I don't think my expectations are that high.

I'd like Hamilton, but he makes me nervous. I don't expect him to dominate right away.

I would be VERY happy to grab both/either of these guys. Both are impact players at the MVC level in my opinion.

I don't think your expectations are too high. I don't think we need a true 5 to be honest, but a serviceable MVC Big Man? Yes. Some of our best big men as of late have been unheralded Juco/non-traditionals guys - Tyshon, TB, Salley, Theron, etc.

Salley I liked the guy and he brought some toughness but the guy had bricks for hands. The other guys were all 4s at best. Yes we need a 5 to play with the elite teams unless you believe just making the NCAA and losing in the first round as acceptable. A true 5 gives a team an inside base which opens the outside shot.
