  • Is 15 wins enough to...

Get an invitation to one of those second level post season tournaments (below the NIT)? I've never been a fan of those tournaments because I've viewed them as non-value add (no media coverage...no bump to recruiting). On second thought, I think I would be happy to see BU in a low level tournament this year. For one, it gives the seniors another chance to put the jersey on, secondly, it may provide a minor revenue grab (we're almost certain to put 5,500 butts in the seats), and thirdly, after what we've been through the last few seasons, it would be a moral victory. The question is: Will 15 wins get us an invite? Home game?

For the CBI or CIT, I suspect we'll need a .500+ record, and be willing to pay their exorbitant fee to get an invitation to enter their tournaments. But, I doubt we can sell enough tickets to keep from losing a lot of money buying into the CBI for a home game. The CIT charges a little less, but it will probably still be a money-losing prospect.

My opinion is no, we still need a few more wins and I have never had any problem with the team playing in those tournaments because the competition has been very good in those tournaments , Cincy,Old Dominion,Oakland and Tulsa to name a few, of course we are hoping to be in the big tournament but getting to play more helps the team improve especially for next season as you are allowed more practice time.

Interesting topic. Can we get enough W's to get an offer? Then, do we want it? I say we have enough young guys to make it worthwhile.

But let's see how the next couple weeks play out.

If BU can win 3 more games out of the next 5 (or 6) games then I think they deserve to go to an EIEIO Tourney, regardless of whether it is a money loser.

Thanks for setting me straight on the revenue thing. I wasn't sure what the fee would be. Apparently the "break even" point is greater than the 6k or so tickets we would sell. So now the questions becomes: Is there value in taking a small loss?

The buy-in fee for the CBI when Bradley played in it in 2008 was $60,000 to host a 1st round game. Last year, the fee reportedly rose to $70,000. I was told that even though Bradley set attendance records for the CBI in 2009 that have still never been broken, that we actually lost money hosting those games. We also set attendance records the following year when we played in the CIT, but I believe we also lost money on that tournament. We were invited to play in both tournaments in 2010, but turned them down, partly because of the cost.

Am I right in assuming any home game in the CIT or CBI would be held in the Renaissance Coliseum instead of renting Carver Arena?

Coming from 7-25 last year, I'd agree to it. It's like a 6-6 college football team taking the bid to play in the Little Caeser's Bowl in Detroit.

That would be my thought as well. How may games would we need there in order to break even? There's still a cost to operate a game there. Does anyone have any idea what the costs break down is? How many seats can we actually sell and how much?

Hate to say it but I'm in the mind set that if we can't break even its not worth it. I'd suspect for many reasons it has been a down cycle in revenues for BU overall and I'd rather spend the money we do have in other investments. I thought BU was trying to build a practice dome? BU is not the federal government and it cannot run a deficit if it wants to remain a top notch educational institution.

I would suspect that funds for the dome will come from private donations (or other opportunities) and not from the internal budget.

Funds are all fungible I guess but there are other projects that BU is trying to get off the ground where I'm sure the school is monitoring all expenses and looking at their returns. The last decade has been historic for the university and all the building they have built but the work is still incomplete. If we can't break even can the university really afford the luxury? Will it help with fund raising? Will it really help next year's team? I do not know the answer.

Just my thoughts here...Any CIT or CBI games would be in the Coliseum. BU would seek a home game. Hey, why not. More wins are needed for this discussion. Believe it would be at a $ loss given my math. Really don't see any way around that...

I believe the practice dome discussion continues. Unique opportunity. Potentially a way to put BU Braves signage right on I-74 across the dome's side top. That would be neat. Just throwing it out there...

The infrastructural improvements on campus have been excellent to date....There is additional "activity" under discussion to help with university enrollment, academic branding, national recognition, and profit...

There are definitely fund-raising opportunities in the works for the dome.
