  • Jackie Carmichael

Carmichael must wish he played Bradley 25 times a year - here are his career numbers against Bradley and against the rest of the world...
I applaud him as one of the best players in the Valley and honestly - if I were picking a team, I have to say I am even thinking I might go with him over the other MVP guy who's been a bit inconsistent lately...

    In 8 career games against Bradley - 127 pts & 84 rebs - 15.9ppg, 10.5rpg
    117 games against everyone else - 1356 pts, 877 rebs - 11.6ppg, 7.5rpg

Just the eight games against BU raise his career averages by almost 1/3 of a point and half a rebound!
I am hoping we get one more shot at him in the Championship game in St. Louis ()

Not surprising given we haven't had an above average big guy in 4 years.

What Valley teams DO have top notch big guys??

SIU uses a 6-2 guy as a low post player - and they hald Jackie to 15 pts last week

Drake only played 17 total minutes with Van Deest and he's hardly "an above average big man" - and nobody else they had was over 6-6 and still held him to fewer points than he got against us and less than half the rebounds..

And besides Creighton - Wichita's the only other team with a good big man (Carl Hall) and Jackie pretty much put up the same kind of numbers against them as he did against us!!

The team that did the very best job containing Carmichael this year (held him to five pts) was Wyoming - and they don't even have a center - they play 3 guards and two 6-7 forwards..
and Northwestern (held him to 13) and their only big man Olah played just 9 minutes!
Also - Delaware State found a way to hold him to eight.

So if it isn't the players, then what's the problem?

Maybe Carmichael & Brown & company are just so good that we will never have a chance to stop them no matter what kind of defense we play against them...maybe, but I am not convinced...

Here is ISU's schedule- 26 games, ten losses...

it's easy to see who their two best scorers are - in fact just about their only two consistent scorers...
One gets the majority of his points in the paint and the other gets the majority of his point from shooting it from beyond the arc....
ALL TWELVE of their remaining players combined account for the other half of their points but I strongly suspect we could play them 10 times and none of those guys is really gonna beat us.
In the one game where Wilkins really did go off and have kind of a career game - WE BEAT THEM ANYWAY because we contained Jackie & Brown.

Then note that in every single loss they have, except the loss to Top 5 rated Louisville - one or both of their leading scorers was held under 20...
In virtually every other game that they win - one or both of their guys goes off big and gets 20-30 points...

Can you explain to me how both of those guys - especially Brown got so many open looks last night? Even wide open lanes to drive right to the hoop for layups and dunks.
If we are going to beat them - we have to do better defending their two scorers - maybe it's not possible - you seem to hint that you think we just don't have the personnel to do so - but I think we do and we did it once already this year.

This year at Carver JC did not have a great game because The Redbirds stopped looking for him inside. He had a few more touches last night then the last time we played them. That's exactly the adjustment I would have made if I was them.

I'll take a crack at this one. I'd say we didn't guard them very well. Not trying to be funny just telling it like it is. I have always loved Carmichael and you can go back to my posts his 1st year as a Redbird. I really like Brown to but he needs to learn when to take whats given him. Has a little Walt in him if you know what I mean.

I was amazed at how Jackie made what like 5 or 6 13-18 foot jump shots? Was not inside as much...whatever...he could play shooting guard for us.
