  • Civic Center memories

I saw the paper had a page of reminiscing over the 30 years that the Civic Center has been BU's home court...but I don't think it's available online

Anyone else have a favorite memory??

Bradley started their tenure at Carver Arena in fall of 1982 so I do wonder why the 30-year article is only now appearing - but my favorite memories - not necessarily in order of importance are...

-Just seeing Hersey play - and watching him slice & dice everyone else's defenses for 30, 40, and 50

-JL's end to end play to beat ISU in 1986 plus all the great Versace/Donewald battles

-the blowout win over ISU in '88 in the MVC Tourney

-the great game winning shots by JL, Hersey, CRob, & others and spectacular dunks by Roberts, Hersey, Parker, and even DRuff

-the sellout wins over DePaul & all the sellout wins over ISU

-the snow game when only a few hundred showed up for the win over CU

-the run BU put on late in 2005-06 - winning the final 7 home games (including one of the all time worst pummellings in the entire BU/ISU series - when we beat them 73-44, only 3 of their starters even scoring a point!) to grab the at-large bid which sent us to the Sweet 16

-and just getting to know and be a part of the careers of all the great kids that have come thru Bradley - we all know about Hersey & the other NBAer's but kids like Brandyn Heemskerk, Sam Singh, Eddie Mathews, The Roadrunner, Massive Mike, Aaron Zobrist, Billy Wright, Boogie, Will F. and many others who aren't household names - are guys I still remember and still have fond memories of.

This happened 2 years ago today. I remember it quite distinctly as I was watching the game on my laptop while snowed in at Methodist...my wife was in labor (the OB watched most of the 2nd half with me).

      snow game

They were telling fans not to come to the game. Of course, I convinced my wife that our Toyota Highlander AWD would safely get us to the Civic Center. It was a great win for Bradley and I enjoyed how coach McDermott complained that his team lost due to the game time start being moved up to 4pm instead of 7pm.

That was a fun day. It was a Tuesday (2/1/11) and there was a massive winter storm starting but the worst was due to hit that evening. So when Bradley and the Civic Center people announced that the game had been moved up to 3:00pm from it's scheduled 7:00 PM start to try to avoid the worst of the accumulating snow, most fans were still working or already snowed in at home. I would not have attempted it if I didn't own a 4-wheel drive. Though the announced attendance was 8,091, only about 800 people were there. The BU win snapped an 11 game MVC losing streak.

PEORIA, Ill. ? Bradley senior guard Andrew Warren scored 20 of his game-high 23 points in the second half and the Braves (7-16, 1-11 MVC) picked up their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season, 69-61, against Creighton Wednesday afternoon at a sparsely populated Carver Arena.

The snow game was awesome. We sat in the first row behind the scorer's table.

That was when Les got into it with the Creighton Assistant Coach in the post-game handshake line. Loved that.

Right after the game is when the snow really started to come down, had to help someone push their van out of the snow on the way to the parking deck. We then headed to Crusens to wait out the storm.

            Others...

            '95-'96
-Down 47-30 at half vs Tulsa, BU forces OT and (if I recall properly) outscores them something like 17-4 to win.
-ISU game on senior night, players swarmed by students and seniors give speeches standing on scorers table

            '97
            -Michigan. Roberson's dunk (nuff said)

            '06-'07
-beating DePaul by 20 on opening night

            '07-'08
-coming this close to beating #10 Michigan St
-beating Creighton by 30 after leading by 42 at one point

            '09
-beating 14-0 ISU and bringing their irrational fans back to earth ("we could run the table in the Valley" followed by over 15 people agreeing - I still have a screen shot of that post)
            -Chris Roberts' 75-footer vs Oakland

            '11
-Andrew Warren's senior night beatdown of Drake

            '12-'13
            -Walt's buzzer beater vs ISU
-Down by 17 vs ISU in 1st half, winning by 6

I believe I have all of those on DVD, except for the Michigan State game. If anyone has old games on VHS, I am always looking to trade.

I have no idea if it is hard to do. But it would be awsome if someone could post those on Youtube. I have a bunch of older stuff on VHS, I have never checked if it is hard to do. Maybe sometime I will see what needs to be done. I won't have time for that till summer though.

That'd be awesome! It's not too terribly hard as far as I know, hardest is to get the files converted. It'd be great for preserving tradition! I'd love to see Carver back when it was rocking every game!
... At the end, of the storm, there's a golden sky. And the sweet silver song of the lark. Walk on, through the wind, walk on, through the rain, though your dreams be tossed, and blown. Walk on, Walk on with hope in your hearts, and you'll never walk alone!
I'm behind you 100% Bradley Braves, You'll Never Walk Alone! BEAT STATE!

People, if you have VHS, I can transfer it for you. I just want to expand my collection. If you have games, I'm your guy.

I have done games for Chico and Double D if anyone needs a reference.

                      Most fun game ever.

The fact that the Locker Room (on Jefferson next to the Janssen Law Center. good place) was open at 11 AM made it a perfect pregame and walk to the game in the Bliz.

Remember wearing tuxes to first game there...

Trevor Trimpe ripping his hand open.. Beating Drake win to get MVC CHampionship (I believe) it's been awhile...

Many other tales... Maybe I will write a book someday... lol
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

                          I would love this too!!!!

I was thinking of doing a montage of WL's greatest plays over the last 3 home games, but am unsure how to do it from DVR. I've seen people just record clips of games from digital camera or camcorder and then post of YouTube.

Other clips that could be on YouTube: (b.t.w. we could create a channel called, "B-U-Tube")

                          Roberson's dunk vs. Michigan
Highlights of the Mich. St. - BU game in 2007. Still never saw any footage of this!
The last minute of the Kansas-BU game in 2006.
The run vs. Pitt in 2006, capped off by Bennet's banker to put BU up by about 10.
Winning bank shot by W. Franklin in 2007 vs. SIU (53-51 win)

Oh! I almost forgot the UNI game from 2 years ago! Amazing comeback against a top 25 Valley opponent.

My favorite memories in the civic center are probably the early years. Les's senior year when it seemed he never made a mistake. Watching Hersey develop along with the others from that freshman class, Trimpe, Jones, Powell, Thomas. Its funny though, I've watched more games now in the civic center but my most vivid memories are still from the Fieldhouse. Loved that place.
