I don't get people who are surprised by this year, outside of maybe avoiding one or two bad losses. We're beating teams we're supposed to beat. We're putting together a reasonable record. I think some people went all chicken little and assumed we'd be horrible again this year.
Going into this year, I would've said 10-9 or 11-8 would be the baseline to compare this team against after 19 games.
I'm very surprised with where we are right now. Coming off back to back last place finishes, and losing our only all-MVC player Taylor Brown, who was our leading scorer and 2nd leading rebounder, I was just hoping we'd avoid last again. That's not a knock on the players-- it's a logical conclusion. We lose our all-league guy, and add a JUCO and freshman (and two transfers who have to sit out a year) to a group that finished in the cellar back to back. To be tied for 4th almost halfway through the race is astounding.
Yes, there aren't any wins over great teams, but BU went toe-to-toe with ranked Michigan and Wichita State, and probably beats the Shockers if it has Egolf. There have been a couple bad showings (S FL, UNI), but you're really straining yourself if you see the glass half empty with these guys. The glass is 12/19 full.
Credit needs to go to the coaches and the players who are putting in the extra time and effort. This team doesn't have a stud Larry Bird trophy contender like McDermott or Carmichael, but they have displayed the effort and grit needed to compete with any team in this league. (Well, we'll see with Creighton shortly.)
I feel sorry for anybody who isn't enjoying this. Some of you need to get over this coaching change. Few people wanted Les to succeed more than me, but what's done is done. Registering an account on Bradleyfans.com calling yourself aggiefan is ridiculous, and not supporting the team and coaching staff because you have an issue with the administration or want to say "I told you so" is also ridiculous. Reminds me of Republicans or Democrats who root for the economy to tank when the other party is in power. Take your partisan blinders off and look at the big picture.
Great post!!! I feel much the same. At the very least, nobody should feel like we've underachieved, which is the feeling most every BU fan has had since the 2006-07 season (and 2007-08 ended pretty well)
A lot of fans were not even concerned with our record this season, but over halfway through January, and our record actually is something we're paying attention to!
I still only see us winning 8 total games at the very best, but up until now, I am pleasantly surprised we are 4-3, as we've won all the games we should win.
Aside from Wins and Losses though, there is no doubt our competititeness has reached a totally different plateau from last season, and even the season prior.
I don't mind if we lose by 15 or less on the road to the top half of the league, but would hate to see another 30-point blowout loss like we shamefully witnessed at UNI.
I really didn't think we'd win the last 2 games at home after the pathetic showing at UNI, where I thought we may be reverting back to our old ways. But the Braves proved me wrong.
It's obvious the team is learning Geno's system after the first year, much like it took the the Braves to get used to the Albeck system in the 80's. Nobody I know, no matter how hard some try to imply, is against Geno. We do have a tougher schedule ahead than we have had already. Let's hope the guys can pull off a couple upsets.

I agree. Let's see if we can steal one or both of UNI and Evansville at home, one or both at Drake and MSU, and a split against ISU red. If we can win 4 of these 6, that would be a good accomplishment, though I'm not giving up on the game at Evansville or the home game against Indiana St. either.

Albeck had one heck of a team to work with. Too bad he was not a good recruiter.

True, but it took that team a year to get used to his NBA style of run and gun. Went to his first game as BU coach up in Ann Arbor and even with all the talent that team had we got beat bad, giving up over 100 that game and if I remember right the next 2 games out in California also. Saw Stan on the elevator later that evening after the Michigan game. He ask us if we saw a particular game on tv that night which was another high scoring game. He said "that's my kind of game." Told him we found that out last night.
Not sure if you're only talking about starters or not with this last statement. If so, then I don't know if we'll be better than this year or not. Guess I'll have to see the 2 transfers in game situations.
Replacing Jake and DSE with Fields and Grier is probably a draw at this point and only a draw because of moving Walt out of the point guard spot. Prosser does not even come close to giving us what Egolf does!
Shaun,
Hard to argue with what you say. I guess I am hoping TP is better as a senior than as a junior. Same theory with WL. I also went back and looked at WE's junior year and that wasn't too impressive. He made quite an improvement between his junior and senior years. JP on the other hand has been worse this year year compared to his sophmore year. Hopefully JP can step it up too next year.
I believe having a natural point gaurd will help a lot. As will having a gaurd who can shoot the three (JE has been much better lately).
I also think having a deeper rotation will help a whole lot. Especially from mid-January on. Of course the third year with Geno's system should help a little too along with not relying on newcomers. The two new gaurds will have been practicing with the team for over a year, obviously.
One of our last scholarships may go to someone who ends up starting.
I guess I didn't do a real good job of defending my position because mostly it is just a bunch of specutlation on my part. I just think all the positives will outweigh the negatives of losing our three starting seniors.

He may have been too nice of a guy. He always found the time to speak with the fans. I remember talking to him when they first hired him down at the Lucky Lady. You would never have found DV there.
