  • ESPN3 Question for Bobby Parker

I don't want this to sound disrepectful, but I am wondering why some teams in the MVC (like Missouri St. and Creighton to name just 2) are able to work with ESPN3 to stream their local telecasts on ESPN3. I realize those schools may not have their own streaming packages and may lose some money, but the experience for their fans is very, very good.

I thoroughly enjoyed the stream from Missouri St. today on ESPN3. The quality was good and it was very enjoyable.

So my question is - why can't Bradley do this for any local telecasts? I very much enjoy what Bradley does trying to get local games on, but for the Chicago and other alumni, it would be very good to get affiliated with ESPN3 as many, many other schools are.

Bobby - have you looked at this? I believe other schools in the MVC are aligned with ESPN3 as Wichita and even Illinois St. has had some games on.

+1 from me as well. I would love to see a few more of our games streamed on ESPN3 as well. The great thing about this platform is that you can see games from conferences that ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU would never think of showing. I also can get a lot of Horizon League games that cover several of my local teams as well. I think this would be a win-win situation for Bradley and their fans, and hopefully would expose the product and get more people to show up for the games.

Last year or 2 years back, several of the Bradley WTVP feeds were simulcast on ESPN3.. I'm not sure how/why that happened...I think those games even made ESPN+ which is their Sunday Ticket/Extra Innings-type College Basketball package that fans/sports bars can subscribe to on satellite or cable.

When I initially streamed ESPN 3 on my computer the feed came from MSU and the quality was relatively poor. So, I logged into my Braves.tv account to watch the Bradley stream with Snell and Klein and the quality was MUCH better than what I found on ESPN 3... That surprised me.

I was out and had to watch the replay on ESPN3. It wasn't available on BU.tv yet. I noticed that the quality started out poor and got better by the game's end. It started out as one-bar quality and ended with the top quality rating at the bottom of the ESPN screen. I don't know when it changed. The picture was good.

I think that quality bar monitors your current Internet bandwidth and how much power it can get from your computer...Then sends you the best quality you can handle.. It's possible your computer was also doing something like updating anti-virus or downloading emails, which clears up by the end of the game.

There's no substitute listening to Snell! Man are we LUCKY to have such a quality play by play professional. I'm betting we have the best in all of college basketball.

As ph has indicated it is not always you're internet stream but the services your computer is performing along with your video card. I know I'm saving money for the next generation of TV and a computer with a ton of memory and a rad video card that a gamer would be proud of!

It is something we will continue to evaluate, but it is often a frustrating arrangement. Trying not to draw viewers away from our own streaming platform is one aspect, but relatively minor in the whole scheme of things. Personally, I have a philosophical issue with the idea that ESPN wants the feed at no cost to them, but covers the ads within the broadcast and replaces within their own ads. Yes, the added viewership is probably worth it, but I really do not like the business arrangement.

I agree! Keep doing what you're doing IMO. They are nothing but thugs then IMO.

I didn't realize that ESPN pulls that kind of nonsense when negotiating what is shown on their platform. That sounds like they are trying to get the feeds on the cheap, which does not benefit Bradley at all. I agree with others that we shouldn't be selling out to them.

ESPN3 is different than the actual ESPN channels available on cable- I suspect few people watch a game like Bradley-Missouri State unless they are already fans of one of the teams. The total audience would have been rather small.
I could see being generous with the feed and ads if it was to get a game on TV, but not so much for a game on ESPN3.

I had the exact opposite experience. I started with BU.tv because I'd prefer to hear Dave Snell call the game, but the grainy footage wasn't cutting it for me. ESPN3's feed was crystal clear.

Yeah, but it wasn't HD clear like most of the actual ESPN games are. MSU probably can't afford to upgrade to that, but the footage was clear, just not what most are used to seeing when watching the ESPN and MVC network games.

Having not subscribed to BU.tv, I can't comment on how our feed looks, though I have been toying around with maybe buying a monthly pass just to see how good it looks and to hear Snell and Kleine's call while actually watching the game.

I had exactly the same experience yesterday. Very surprising since every other time I have watched ESPN 3 the picture has been great.

Thanks for the response Booby. I appreciate the insight Bobby. Never knew how that worked. My only point is that if most all of the other MVC schools are getting in on this, it could leave us behind in terms of exposure and recruiting. Remember that ESPN3 is available on Watch ESPN as an app. So tablet and smartphone capability is key for the future.

I appreciate your info and I'm not saying espn is fair.... But I do appreciate your saying it is something BU still evaluates......
