  • Question

In first half tonight, SIU inbounded the ball across from the Bradley bench. The pass was a long, cross court pass and ended up hitting the rim first.

My question: if that ball goes in what is the official ruling? Surely no points are awarded? Does play just go on and play the ball out of the net?

I didn't see the play, but it should be a dead ball and awarded to the other team if it hits the rim or goes in. Here's the actual NCAA rule:

    Rule 9, Section 5,
Art. 1. The thrower-in shall not:
    g. Throw the ball so that it enters the basket before touching anyone, strikes the back of the backboard or its supports, passes over the backboard, or bounces into the playing court from a balcony or from the floor out of bounds.

    Therefore, Rule 9, Section 15.
Floor-Violation Penalties (Applies only to Rules 9-3 through 9-14)
Art. 1. The ball shall become dead or remain dead when a violation occurs. The ball shall be awarded to a nearby opponent for a throw-in at a designated spot nearest to where the violation occurred.
Art. 2. When the ball passes through a basket during the dead-ball period immediately after a violation, no point(s) can be scored and the ball shall be awarded to an opponent at a designated spot nearest to where the violation occurred.

The ball skipped across the top of the rim and was caught by an SIU player, which is not a violation. As noted, if it had hit the backboard or gone into the basket, the play would have been blown dead, and awarded to Bradley.

I guess you're right as usual DC. I overlooked the rim being omitted from the rule.

of course no points scored while the clock is stopped would count - (unless the ball was in the air at the buzzer)
it's a dead ball turnover to the other team

DC you are correct. It is not a violation for a pass from out of bounds to hit the rim. It is a violation if it goes in and the defending team gets a throw-in at the spot of the previous throw-in. No time should run off the clock. If it does the time should be replaced on the clock because the clock does not become alive until legally touched and in this case it wasn't ever touched by any of the non throwers.

this actually happened in a game a few years ago - I do not recall all the specifics...but I think it was Bradley inbounding the ball from inside half court and threw a long lob to towards the hoop that Chris Roberts was supposed to go get...
but it actually went into the basket and was then awarded as wizard said to the other team..

I remember this. I actually mentioned it last night at the game after this particular play.

I believe it was Sam Singh inbounding the ball at around the half court line opposite the scorers table. And if I remember correctly, it was a tied game with under 1 second on the clock. The ball went in and was awarded to the other team who failed to score. It went into overtime and I think Bradley won anyway.

Can anyone confirm this memory of mine?

My memory of this is not good- but here is a game with a similar play- a double-overtime Bradley win over Drake back on 2/28/09- Could this be the play you were thinking of?
PEORIA, Ill. ? In his final regular-season home game, Bradley senior forward Theron Wilson turned in another stellar performance, finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds and matching his career high with six assists by snaring Drake's final desperation attempt to lead the Braves (17-13, 10-8 MVC) to a 77-75, double-overtime victory against Drake (17-14, 7-11 MVC) Saturday night at Carver Arena.? With the win, Bradley finishes alone in fourth place in the final Missouri Valley Conference standings and will face No. 5 seed Southern Illinois (13-17, 8-10) in Friday's second quarterfinal game at 2:35 p.m. of the State Farm MVC Tournament at Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

                  See the 6th paragraph-
Bradley held a 71-67 advantage after Singh made the first of two free throws with 31 seconds left in first extra stanza, but Young made free throws with 18 seconds left, and after Maniscalco split his two charity attempts with 17 seconds to go, Drake??™s Adam Templeton buried a corner trey with 9 seconds left for a 72-72 tie. Bradley hurried the ball up the floor, but Maniscalco was stripped going up for a 3-point try and a scrum for the ball ultimately left Bradley trying an inbounds play from the right wing with 0.3 seconds remaining. On a night when Bradley shot just 6-for-25 (.240) from 3-point range, freshman point guard Eddren McCain lobbed an inbounds pass toward the basket, where Wilson appeared to dunk the game??™s winning points. The referees determined, however, that McCain??™s pass was in the cylinder and waved off the bucket, instead granting Drake a similar desperation try from the same spot and with the 0.3 seconds still remaining.

That has to be it. Good find. I miss Theron.
