  • Ugly game of the night

Maryland (13-2) at Miami (11-3)- this game is on ESPNU.
Both teams shot poorly and struggled to stay at 30% from the floor for most of the game. Miami lead at halftime 19-14, and it stayed close until Miami pulled away at the end.
    Final-
    Maryland 47
    Miami 54

A comment from CBSSports writer Jeff Borzello-

"54-47 doesn't come close to reflecting the offensive ineptitude of this game."

I'll add the game I was at today:

    Iowa 70
    Northwestern 50

Iowa was up 25-15 at the half, and NW could not buy a three pointer or free throw in the first half. I honestly don't know how Iowa started the Big Ten season 0-3 because they looked like Michigan against the Wildcats today!

I will add that Welsh-Ryan Arena is a great place to watch a game, and it would be great if Bradley could start a series against Northwestern one of these years. Of course today there were at least as many, if not more Hawkeye fans than NW fans, and were louder than the NW fans for obvious reasons.

Oh, and NW has just as many of these stupid promotions during timeouts as Bradley does. I guess that's how the money is made these days!

and their dark floor - combined with their poor lighting makes watching any game on TV from Welsh-Ryan Arena a headache..

Couldn't be much uglier than the first half of the BU-UNI game last Saturday.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

I didn't find the lighting that bad. Maybe in person it looks better than on TV. It's definitely the oldest venue in the Big Ten, but it has that small arena charm. Kind of like the venues that Gonzaga and some of the smaller mid-major teams play in. And it definitely was loud there yesterday. Too bad though that most of the noise came from the 2 or 3000 Iowa fans who showed up there!

I don't like that half of WR Arena has bleacher seats though. But it kind of reminds me of the old Bradley fieldhouse.

Well NW only gave up 25 first half points. But the game got out of hand early in the second half even though NW's offense finally showed up as they got outscored 45-35 in the second half.

Down at one time 22-2 and only 14 points in a half, can't get much uglier than that.

I'm talking about the NW game from yesterday, that it wasn't as "ugly" as the Bradley game.

Let's go to the NBA for the ugly game of the night last night. The Bulls absolutely destroyed the Atlanta Hawks 97-58 last night after the Hawks took the brunt of the wrath of Tom Thibodeau. This was the same Atlanta team that smeared a lifeless Bulls team by 17 at their place just before Christmas. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they ended up with the Bulls after another ugly performance against Phoenix the other night, which prompted Thibodeau's profanity laced tirade at practice yesterday morning!

I guess this goes to show that even good teams have bad performances like this from time to time, which hopefully bodes well for Bradley tonight.

I watched the Bulls-Hawks game and I was amazed at how poorly the Hawks played, and how lifeless their team looked. They looked like they didn't want to be there, and didn't care if they lost or were embarrassed. The Hawks have one of the better records in the NBA East (6th slot in the East and only 3.5 games behind conference-leading Miami), and they have been one of the strongest teams in the NBA the last couple years. I don't know what problems Coach Drew might be having with his players, but it looked like they have some real issues.
BTW, one of Head Coach Larry Drew's assistants is Bob Bender, former ISU coach.

Yeah, maybe something is brewing there that we don't know about as the Hawks looked a lot better earlier in the season than they do now. That said though, something tells me the Hawks still would have lost even with a much better effort as they had the complete misfortune of playing a very angry Bulls team at the wrong time.

Once again involving Northwestern, but on the opposite side of the final score. Illinois lookied horrible tonight as NW made more 3's and FT's, as they win for just the 4th time in 50 (!) road games against ranked teams during the Bill Carmody era. NW beats #22 Illinois 68-54 in a game where Illinois could not even make a serious run to get back into the game after trailing by 15 at the half!

There's a blog on ESPN that shows the year's "psycho" teams, those with great wins and baffling losses. They can now add Illinois to this list. They beat Gonzaga on the road (almost unheard of), won the Maui Classic, and beat Ohio State at home by 19 not that long ago. But they have now lost to Purdue at Purdue and NW at home and have limped to a 1-4 start in the Big Ten. It looks like NW is a much better road team as of late going back to late last season, but still! I thought Weber was not coaching Illinois this year!

Until Paul, Richardson and Griffey are gone Illinois will continue to be an underachieving team. The reason Illinois won a lot of those early games was because Paul was playing like a player of the year candidate. That's not happening right now. Illinois doesn't have a true point guard, sound familier, and no inside scoring so teams can focus on shutting down the outside shot. The more physical play in the Big Ten also doesn't help the Illini.

I only saw some highlights but Illinois' loss to Northwestern apparently had it's ugly moments...

-U of I was 23rd ranked and was heavily favored but got beaten badly by Northwestern who was coming off a blowout loss of their own at Iowa.
                            -Illini shot poorly once again
-Illini coach John Groce complained enough to get tossed
-the same ref that ejected John Groce then went to the stands and ejected a student member of the Illini cheering section - the Orange Krush

BTW - many will recall that this same referee, who is not well liked by the Illini fans, Jim Burr...
is the guy who walked off the floor while a critical tournament game was still going back in 2011....after making numerous mistakes...
By exiting as quickly as they left the court, the three officials who were involved in those puzzling no-calls in the final moments of St. John’s 65-63 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday have …

The failure of three referees to officiate until the final buzzer of the St. John's-Rutgers Big East second-round game Wednesday at Madison Square Garden was "unacceptable," the head of the NCAA's officiating told ESPN.com Wednesday afternoon.

I did see the game, and the officiating had nothing to do with Illinois' embarrassing performance, and their loss. They shot very poorly and allowed Northwestern to look like the Miami Heat.

Illinois (1-4 in the Big Ten after being ranked for most of the season) is the ISU of the Big Ten.
