  • Shades of Hersey?? Corey Hawkins with "incredible game winning shot"!

UC Davis sophomore Corey Hawkins knocks down the game-winner off the tipped rebound to give the Aggies the 69-67 victory.Cal Poly at UC Davis on January 10, ...

I kinda remember someone else at Bradley who seemed to regularly make tremendous game-winners...

It was Corey Hawkins who brought the ball up the court with the game tied. His pass was to senior point guard Paolo Mancasola who is only a 14% shooter from three. That shot was partially blocked which lead to the loose ball deflecting back to Corey for the winner.

Anyone notice coach Les standing next to the official running onto the floor going absurd thinking there should have been a foul on the 3 point shot while Hawkins nails the game winner lol?

          an interesting "revision" of history???

Here's a blurb about DePaul's HOF Class - Terrence Greene...and note one of Greene's quotes...

"And despite some of the best times of his life, Greene does have one
regret---not winning the NCAA title in the 1986-87 season.

“Hey, we had four pros on that team---Rod Strickland, Dallas Comegys, Kevin
Edwards and Stanley Brundy---and we were a bunch of junkyard dogs on
defense,” Greene said. “Our defense created our offense and we had great
          chemistry on that team.

“Coach Joey Meyer always had me guard the opponent's best offensive
player. We stopped Hersey Hawkins with me defending him and Dallas back in
          the block
along with help from the other guards."

"We started off winning our first 16 games and finished 28-3. That’s the most
wins by any team in DePaul history. It still bothers me to this day, that NCAA
tournament loss (63-58 ) to LSU in the Sweet 16.”

well - I wonder if he's misremembering something here -- and here's why...
In 1986-1987 - we never played DePaul....we did the following season - so maybe that's what he is remembering -
but we did not have them on the schedule in 1986-87, and in 1987-88 when we did play then, Dallas Comegys was already gone form DePaul.

Now that you mentioned it. But I am not sure that was what he was doing. The official is right next to Jim, but he doesn't appear to be talking to him at all. It look to me like he seems focused on what's happening on the floor. I think he was assuming the game was going to end in a tie, and he was preparing to meet with his team out on the floor to get ready for overtime.

Here's a much better angle and view of the same great game-winning play

Who can forget the last second shot in Des Moines on the pass from Les to the Hawk and then 2 days later in Dayton when the Hawk tied the game on a last second shot? Made national sports news. Oh, the good old days. Fire the coach, we are too successful.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

My opinion, although no one asked me, is that he was ready to go ballistic on the non-call, although obviously no one can know for sure. And it ended up not mattering. Good for Coach Les.

Who knows if that's how the play was drawn up, but it looked like "Paolo" was the one who was open for at least a split second. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good (the part where the ball was deflected back to Corey), but Corey is a great shooter and he got a perfect, if very quick look.

Good for Les and the team as they have had some tough luck so far. Hopefully this win wakes their team up for the rest of the season.

HOLY CRAP! Les is lucky that he didn't get a technical or have that game winner called off... He was half way on the court before that buzzer sounded and before Hawkins' shot.

I think it is a situation similar to Coach Bill Self or Coach K, they are so fortunate to have a coach of JL's stature in the Big West, that even the officials grant him some slack.
