  • Valley 1st team (after Q1)

So who should be on the Valley 1st team after 4 Valley games?

    My picks:

    McDermott (CU)
    Early (WSU)
    Ryan (UE)
    Downing (MSU)
    Odum (ISU-blue)
    ----
    Next 2:
    Lemon Jr. (BU)
    Carmichael (ISU-red)

I don't think we've had 2 superstars in the Valley for quite some time...though Early is just starting to come into his own.

Cle Early is looking like he could give McDermott some competition for POY the way he's been playing. Probably the most talented player in the league.

        Good topic!

My votes for All-MVC at this point:
        Greg McDermott
Jackie Carmichael (despite team being winless)
Walt Lemon (18.3 ppg in Valley play, carries his team at times)
Cleanthony Early (22.5 ppg in Valley play, no-brainer)
Colt Ryan (21.3 ppg in MVC games)

        Honorable mention:
Troy Taylor (10.8 rpg, 5.5 asst per game, I think this kid might be MVC for Evansville despite Colt Ryan)
Anthony Downing (20.3 ppg in MVC play & in top 10 in eight different stat categories)
Jake Odum (will get votes for league MVP even if not a big time scorer)
Dyricus Simms-Edwards (where would BU be without his defense?)
Ethan Wragge ( really just think Creighton should have 2 guys and Wragge is hitting 57% from 3-pt range)

Current frontrunner for Player of the Year: Doug McDermott - the award is his to lose

Current frontrunner for Newcomer of the Year: Cleanthony Early - slam dunk

Current frontrunner for Freshman of the Year: Micah Mason - no freshman is really standing out but Mason doing a good job running the point for Drake

Current frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year: Dyricus Simms-Edwards - very little argument on this one

Current frontrunner for Coach of the Year: Geno Ford - picked 9-10th currently sitting a thread outside of the upper half of Valley
..I know some will say Gregg Marshall - and he's a good pick but he's got top caliber talent and isn't doing all that much better than everyone predicted anyway...plus NOT ONE of their Valley wins is over a team with a current record over .500
        (BU, UNI, Drake, SIU)

My assessment has changed a bit after the last 3 games. And I have to keep in mind that the selection committee puts a lot of stock in the top 2-3 teams.

          MVC 1st Team:

          McDermott (CU)
          Ryan (UE)
          Early (WSU)
          Carmichael (ISU-red)
          Odum (ISU-blue)

          MVC 2nd Team:

Lemon Jr. (BU) - very, very close to Odum for 1st team!
DSE (BU) - you can almost book Defensive POY to his accolades
Echenique (CU) - mainly because of Jays' success and he's HUGE!
Downing (MSU) - very solid 1st half - how can you deny him?
Armstead (WSU) - key contributer to Shox success

          Consideration:
Arop (ISU-blue) - very underrated player that ISU-blue has needed for scoring punch.

Hall (WSU) - will most likely be on 2nd team by season's end to replace someone on the list above, but has missed first 5 league games.

Tuttle (UNI) - good numbers, and connects on 66% of his field goals! UNI needs to finish in Top half though.

Gibbs (CU) - maybe 2nd team if Creighton wins Valley, as he runs the offense nicely.

Jackson (SIU) - unless he finished in top 3 in total scoring, he shouldn't make it onto 2nd team with all the other quality players who have contributed to team's success.

Lemon Jr. should get serious consideration after Odum hasn't been stellar lately.

At any rate, he is a strong 6th place overall I would think, but it would help if BU finishes in the Top 5 to garner more consideration.
A couple nice home games this week might move him up the ranks.

More importantly, BU needs to win, regardless of who scores.
