  • Michigan 95 - Iowa 67

Pretty stunning performance by Michigan over a team, Iowa, that just hung with Indiana and who haven't been manhandled by anyone else...
..looking more and more like Michigan is the team to beat if you get to the Final Four..they are solid and seem to be able to step it up at will...

I'm watching the replay of their game today against Iowa - and Iowa didn't play all that badly but Michigan just had their way...
..shooting almost 60% overall and almost 50% from 3-pt - they look to have potentially all five starters capable of being 1st or 2nd rounders in the next couple drafts...

I'm not certain if its 100% accurate, but on his show yesterday, Geno said "it's January an no one has played Michigan as closely a us"...

Maybe he was talking in terms of how close the game was throughout. But it is not exactly true about the final scores. Bradley lost by 8 (74-66). Michigan has won two other games by a slightly smaller margin, 67-62 over Pittsburgh and 79-72 over NC State.

Also look at the minutes Max B has played. There aren't too many games this year in which he has played 9 minutes!
        Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Iowa was manhandled by Virginia Tech. Wichita State destroyed them inside as well. Iowa will get manhandled several more times before the season is over.

I don't deny those teams beat Iowa but...
Iowa was totally manhandled in this game like no other team has done to them all year..

against Michigan - Iowa hung close only about 15 minutes, then Michigan pulled away and
Iowa was NEVER within 10 points at any time in the 2nd half and was
NEVER closer than 20 points in the final 12 minutes...and behind by 30 over the final 6-7 minutes.
Not one Michigan starter was in at the end and by even the 4 minute mark all were on the banch and never returned.

against Virginia Tech, Iowa was within ONE POSSESSION at the 12 minute mark, and
was within single digits until the final 6-7 minutes, and only behind 20 for a few seconds at the end.
VT's starters played right 'til the final buzzer.

against WSU, IOWA LED AT THE HALF, again was within 2 pts at the 12 minute mark,
and even within TWO possessions in the final minute.
Gregg Marshall surely knew this as he had his starters in right to the end.

All true. But as the youngest team of any of the top 9 conferences, starting THREE FRESHMAN, 2 soph, and 1 jr, (no seniors in the top 7), there will be extreme ups and downs.

Iowa is a great parallel to BU, as they are 1 year ahead in the rebuilding cycle - McCaffery is in his 3rd season. He arrived in 2010 with slim pickings in terms of talent, and a depressed, dwindling student section and fanbase.

Most people who saw this team in McCaffery's first season couldn't see the light, but there were signs in year 2 (knocking off 4 ranked B1G teams).

Fast forward to year three where just 6 days ago, in front of a sold out crowd and student section of 1,500 students (during semester break), Iowa was 1 late basket away from knocking off pre-season #1/current #4 Indiana.

Hopefully Iowa will get manhandled by Northwestern this Sunday since I'm going to that game.

My buddy (who is a big Hawkeyes fan) and I went to this game 2 of the last 3 years and it was plain miserable for Iowa fans under Lickliter.
I expect a closer game with McCaffrey at the helm...maybe even Iowa pulling out the win.
