  • Scouting Refs

After last night's tilted foul balance, let's ignore whether or not it was poor officiating, but rather, does anyone know what GF does about scouting referees to know their tendencies?

I know most of the MVC refs have "reputations" for being tight or lenient but are the coaches actually looking at film of the refs to see what each crew is calling consistently? Then is this being passed on to the team to know if the upcoming game's crew watches for a particular type of foul--reach-ins, banging in the post, over the back, etc?

I didn't see the game, so I don't know what each foul was, but I'm sure some might have been avoidable had our guys been prepared to play smarter. I've played enough to know that sometimes you can't help getting fouls called when playing agressive, but it also helps to know what you can get away with before its 6-0 on the foul board.

I agree to a point. Some of these reffs I have noticed ref differently depending on which conference they are reffing for. Also, most coaches over the years have a feel for the reffs and sometimes you never know how a game will be called until it starts. That is part of the in game adjustment coaches must make. You also need to ride the reffs so they call it the same, both ways.

The refs in the ISU/CU game were pretty good for the most part... Dougie Fresh got a few calls that he shouldn't have, but that is the standard. He was actually called for a travel or two as well (which I had NEVER seen before). They let both teams play pretty physical and did not call too many touch fouls. It was pretty refreshing... The refs were Tom Eades, Mark Whitehead, Terry Oglesby.

From what I see, Geno pays little attention to who the refs are.

I agree although maybe it changes the longer a coach is in the Valley and they develop some history

Higgins/Sanzere = call everything, every little thing anytime anywhere + plus blow calls late in Illinois' games at Purdue

everyone else.... I don't have a problem with.

Who's the bald guy we had last night? He's the one that T'd up Les against ISU for stomping his foot at Egolf.

If it's the guy that I am thinking of, us ISU fans call him cue ball, and he is awful.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there's such a thing as "MVC refs."

If you're worried about the refs before the game, you'll probably be complaining about them afterward, IMO. Just play the game and adjust to what's being called.

Apparently Kipp Kissinger is his name. He actually didn't call the T, but was on the crew that night.

There are most definitely "MVC refs" they are not restricted to the MVC but you will see the same faces time and time again... And there are very few I like...

I get that, but I mean it's not like we have MVC refs like there are Big Ten officiating crews in football. People will say things like, "These Valley refs are awful!" but it's really some refs who happen to work a lot of Valley games. We're on the same page here.

That pretty much says it all. After watching Geno for a little over a year,I'd be very surprised if he watches video of officials. I'm sure he watches a lot of video but of the opposition. I love the way he interacts with officials. He is 100% different than Mo and JL.I can promise you complaining will NOT get you any calls. It somestimes works just the opposite if you know what I mean.

I have to disagree. I think that most division one coaches are very aware of the tendencies of the officials. Maybe not in their first year in a particular conference, but from year two on I think they are very aware of the type of call a specific referee tends to make.

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

                              Then they shouldn't be officiating.
