I agree to a point. Tearing him completely away from what has been his family for the last six years may not be what is best for his recovery. Help yes and I suspect he'll get pretty good counseling going forward. As someone said on an earlier post, none of us on this board will probably ever know the complete story. Opiates and pain killers are some of the worst meds to kick and I suspect his parents will most probably step in and do what's right, whatever that may be.

If I'm his parent I'd get him counseling first and then determine a course of action. I'm guessing playing ball comes in 3rd after his studies but it may be what he needs, as well as part of a redemption process. I'd also have him come back to Alaska after the school year, take him out hiking and whatever it takes to get him 100% clean so he can have a productive and healthy future. This is no small task. He'll be living with this and the knee pain for the rest of his life.

That's why they said "IF". Note they did not say he should be gone before the facts came out. But this leads to the other big question about what is the appropriate punishment if he did buy drugs (something other than the pain killers).

Some have posted here that most of society has taken a callous view towards drug use, and that people should take this problem more seriously. Therefore, some believe there should be a zero tolerance policy place when this happens. Many others are more lenient and believe that since this was his first offense he should just be made to suffer the minimum punishment.

I'm not sure if the people who wanted him out were passing judgement too soon, but more likely they were waiting until the facts came out and then they would post their opinions. But believe me, now that the facts are out, I'm sure there are a few here who think he should still be launched from the team in order to send a message that this is not tolerable behavior. I personally believe in stiff punishments for drug use, BUT now knowing the circumstances of what happened, I don't believe this is an offense that warrants his dismissal from the team. But those who believe in his being dismissed certainly have their right to that opinion, even if the vast majority disagree with that.

      • Man this isn't good at all. Egolf is likely done at BU. My question is, if he was in that much pain, i'm sure the BU doctors could hook him up with some painkillers to continue playing? I know in the NBA/NFL they can give pain injections on gameday, maybe they can't do that in college or something. Feds have been really cracking down on prescription drug abuse, this won;t be good.

The big word here is IF. That's not being quick to the trigger or passing judgement too soon.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

I think this is more probable than anyone might think. Prescription pain killers, especially Vicodin and Oxycontin, are the most popular drugs in our entire country.

After I got hit by that car this summer I was on them for a solid three months (punctured a lung, broke a rib, shattered my wrist/thumb). After all was said and done my doctor took me off them cold turkey. I had no idea the hell that awaited me. Everything hurt, my bones felt like freezing cold glass. Profuse sweating. Vomiting. No energy. Extreme depression. No sleep, extreme irritability and restlessness. The lack of sleep and restless legs is the worst part. Your mind likes to tell you that it will go on forever. That this is the new normal.

I absolutely cannot fathom how heroin addicts do that stuff. I wish that feeling on not even my worst of enemies. Given WE's injury history and the short amount of time it can take to become physically dependent it is highly likely he was in a similar situation. I can absolutely believe even the best of people would seek out a few pills to help ween off of it.

It is the worst feeling in the world. I'd rather just deal with pain.

Here's why I'm less optimistic. If Will couldn't bear the pain in his knee without the Vicodin, then how is he going to be able to play after the suspension, when he has no choice but to play clean.

In that case... I would hope he could get a legally obtained substitute painkiller or other treatment from the medical staff right?

Yes, of course he could. Vicodin is not an NCAA banned drug if prescribed by a doctor. It could actually impair a players performance a little, which is why only someone in great pain would take it and try to play. But there are other alternatives, and I think Will should be able to return to playing without needing this drug.

Do you think we will see Egolf play again for Bradley this season Coach?

true so it wouldn't be like he is playing "clean" as GtG said. if he had another painkiller or prescription Vicodin

I can't imagine a team physician prescribing an addictive narcotic to a player so that he can play through pain. I think he's going to have to figure out how to do it with naproxin.
