Wichita now up 28 and on the line shooting FTs

both teams launch a lot of bad shots - but Wichita gets every rebound so they get so many 2nd chances..

    Here are a couple stats...

    Rebounds Wichita 33 - UNI 12!!!!
    UNI just 3-17 from 3-pt
UNI just 12-43, thus 31 missed shots and only 2 offensive rebounds!!!

Wichita has only one guy off the bench who has scored
..and he's just 1-5 so the Shox do not go deep

Wichita State has a nearly 30 pt lead and still playing mostly starters...
I guess Gregg Marshall does not trust anyone on the bench!

I agree that WSU "dominated" but they still finished with 66 pts, 46% from the field, 35% from 3-pt, and I know I'll take some heat on this but offensively, I think they only looked good because of UNI's terrible play...
I am convinced our defense will produce a totally different game....

I don't know what is wrong with UNI this year. But still an impressive win for WSU with all the injuries they have right now.

After five Valley games the home team has won every one of them...
I guess I am not surprised......

Couple of things. We "don't go deep" because there is no depth LOL. All 9 healthy guys played double digit minutes with no one playing more than 29 mins. Normally our bench scores a little more. But with 3 starters out and 2 other players banged up, we are lucky to even suit anyone up. If anything this shows how deep this team is when healthy. This is our B and C units out there on the depth chart getting most of the minutes. I'm happy to just be winning at this point.

As far as starters playing alot with a 30 point lead, he doesn't pay much attention to that right now. He just rotates to keep fresh legs. Plus CJ Lufile, one of the guys off the bench, tweeked his back some during the game. So he didn't play much late in the 2nd half which made Orupke play more minutes than normal there at the end. I am sure it's nothing serious and just precaution due to so many players being injured already. No reason to push it.

And I just watched some of the game, and with 5 mins or so left I only saw 1-2 starters on the floor. So he did play the end of the bench best he could. It's just all 9 players play a good chunk of the game right now due to necessity. I think he trusts all of his players pretty well. Nick Wiggins (#15) probably has the shortest leash due to his poor defense at times. He is an offensive wizard when he gets going, but you don't play for Marshall by shooting the ball well. You get on the floor by playing defense.

Also, while the offense isn't always great it was pretty decent tonight considering. The Shox aren't shooting as well as Creighton or anything, but they shoot a respectable FG%. 3pt % is very inconsistent, but it has gotten a little better. Good enough to keep teams honest anyway. As a team they are shooting close to 46% from the floor. Not horrible. But the bread and butter of this team is defense and rebounding, which have been outstanding for the most part this year. That is what this team HAS to do if they want to be successfull this year. Just gonna make for a few ugly games at times.

Anyway, I have been impressed by you all this year so far. Definately appear to be much improved. With teams like UNI, Illinois St, Missouri St, SIU...etc struggling the top half of the MVC is up for grabs. Hope you all can pull it off! MVC needs Bradley to be dangerous IMHO. Looking forward to a hard fought game on the 6th!

hey - I can see that - just as we've had our injury & depth problems for several seasons......
but, you got a couple walk ons and with a 30 pt lead - why were they not giving the starters a blow?
BU has played walk ons even in key minutes the past few years due to depth problems...

It's hard to know this Shocker team just watching for the 1st time last night. I'm sure we'll get familiarized with the new players - just doesn't seem like a Valley team in nature. The Shox are extremely quick and athletic and could give CU fits on defense I think.
Maybe 1 home loss in store, and a few on the road, but the Shox have the best chance to contend with the Jays in the Valley from what I've seen, and could make some noise in post-season.

EVERY ABLED BODY PLAYED DOUBLE DIGIT MINUTES. everyone else is either injured or redshirting. Yes the walk on is redshirting. His choice.

Just for reference here is the roster:

Malcom Armstead PG - played 26 mins
Ron Baker G - did not play due to injury
Zach Bush F - walk-on that is redshirting
Kadeem Coleby C - transfer sitting out this year (also paying his own way this year)
Tekele Cotton G - played 32 mins - I did overlook his minutes in an earlier post. I didn't think anyone logged over 29 mins. He was the only one that did
                      Cleanthony Early F - played 27 mins
                      Derail Green F - redshirting
Carl Hall F - did not play due to injury
Chadrack Lufile F - played 11 mins. Mins were cut in 2nd half due to tweeked back
                      Ehimen Orukpe C - played 20 mins
Fred Van Vleet G - played 19 mins
Evan Wessel G - did not play due to injury
Jake White F - played 22 mins (non-starter by the way who played more than Orukpe who IS a starter)
                      Nick Wiggins G - played 14 mins
                      Demetric Williams G - played 29 mins

That is the whole roster. All are accounted for, and all who are suited up and able to play did in fact play. The starters weren't playing a ton late in the 2nd half either. Jake White (non-starter), Fred Van Vleet (non-starter), Nick Wiggins (non-starter) were all in a decent amount late in the game. The ONLY other non-starter that would have been available was Lufile, but as mentioned he told coach he tweeked his back. Only reason he didn't get more minutes late.

reserve Lufile is still hurting and may not play at Drake
..time to hold open tryouts and pick up some walk-ons like Bobby Knight did in "Knight Court"

Jackie Carmichael now has the career blocks record at ISU all to himself...

he is also at 746 career rebounds....but where would that fit if he we compared to the best Bradley rebounders???

Answer -- mouse over below to see...

Carmichael's 746 would be behind many BU Greats - and he'd place 9th...
BU's career record holder is Dick Estergard at 1414!!!
Chet had over 1000, and Harold McMath sits at 8th with 799...
..even guards like Hersey Hawkins (818 career rebounds) are currently ahead of Jackie's numbers - but he is on course to get to around 900...
so he's good - but you gotta remember that way bad RPI schedule he's played against most of his career....

And unlike Carmichael and all players since 1972, Dick Estergard did not play varsity as a freshman. He played only 3 seasons with Bradley (1951-52 - 1953-54), to accumulate that amazing total of 1414 career rebounds.

                            1951-52 479
                            1952-53 540
                            1953-54 395
career...1414 in only 88 games for a career average of 16.1 rpg

Estergard averaged 20.0 rebounds per game in the 1952-53 season.

The MVC record for a season is held by Wes Unseld of Louisville with 533 rebounds in the 1966-67 season. Estergard's 540 rebound season in 1952-53 is not recognized as an MVC record, because Bradley withdrew from the MVC for 4 years from 1951-52 until 1954-55.

yeah - Da Coach and I are old enough that we saw Wes Unseld play when he came to the Fieldhouse....so it made me chuckle a little when I was watching a Valley game this past week and one of the announcers compared one of the players to Unseld....there hasn't been a player in the MVC that comes anywhere close to Unseld for the past 25 years!
