  • Final- Mississippi Valley State 42 Bradley 77

Next game- Mississippi Valley State University at Bradley Wednesday, Dec. 19. at 7:00 PM. Bradley is now 7-2 after their 62-43 win over Georgia Southern on Monday. Mississippi Valley State is in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and is located in Itta Bena, Mississippi.

The Delta Devils are 0-6 after their 70-49 loss at Virginia Tech on Dec. 10. They have lost by an average of 28 points to their 6 opponents. Their RPI is 141, the best RPI among SWAC teams, and actually better than the 144 RPI they posted last season in winning the SWAC Championship and playing in the NCAA tournament. Their 141 RPI right now is the 3rd best RPI for a Bradley opponent so far (behind Michigan #3, and Central Michigan #71)
However, they have played a tough schedule- they have played all 6 of their games on the road against good competition, and their Strength of Schedule is the #2 ranked SOS in Division I-
    Fri, Nov 9 at Mississippi L 57-93
    Tue, Nov 13 at (24) Cincinnati L 60-102
    Thu, Nov 15 at Northwestern L 68-81
    Sat, Nov 24 at LSU L 50-75
    Sat, Dec 8 at Virginia L 39-67
Mon, Dec 10 at Virginia Tech L 49-70

Last season was one of the best seasons in Mississippi Valley State's Division I history. They finished 21-13 overall, and 17-1 in their conference. They were the automatic NCAA qualifier. They lost 59-58 to Western Kentucky in the play-in game. But they lost a significant amount of talent from last year's team, and they lost their head coach Sean Woods, who left to take over at Morehead State.

    Roster and coaches-

Most of their team's statistical numbers are pretty ugly.
Their top 3 scorers are guards, and their top 2 rebounders are also guards. They are lead in scoring by 6-6 guard Davon Usher with 19.3 ppg. He is also their best shooter- he shoots 42.6% from three, and averages 8 three point attempts per game.
No other player averages more than 7.8 ppg. MVSU as a team only shoots only 30.7% overall, and 28.5% from three, and they average only 53.6 points per game. They also are a poor free throw shooting team at 57.7%.
Their top rebounder is 6-4 guard Matt Smith with 7.7 rpg, but as a team, MVSU is averaging almost 12 rebounds less per game than their opponents (35.3 rpg vs. 47 rpg for their opponents). They average just 9 team assists per game, while their opponents average 17 assists per game. Despite the respectable RPI, this is not a very good team.

That is a brutal schedule to play for a small program, but kudos for getting on that many major program's schedules even if they're not all elite basketball progams.

BU should have a good challenge to hold them to less than GaSo last night since they're averaging only 53ppg.

It is interesting to read the history of Mississippi Valley State University. It was created by the state legislature and opened in 1950, as an all black state vocational college, so that the 3 other all-white state universities (Ole Miss, Miss. State, and So. Miss) wouldn't be pressured to integrate. Ultimately of course, they were forced to integrate when the Supreme Court ruled in Brown vs. Board of Education (1954) that segregation was unconstitutional. But they picked the tiny town of Itta Bena, because people in their first choice objected to a black college being placed near their town or properties. Even Itta Bena objected, so they placed the college a mile outside of town.

Itta Bena's population is listed as 2,208 (2000 census). The enrollment of MVSU is small for a state university- only 2500.

Here is a odd fact- the men's teams are nicknamed the Delta Devils, but the women's teams are named the Devilettes. They have different mascots and logos with the Devilette appearing a bit more comely.

              I was close......right?

MSVS lost their 6 games against BCS opponents by an average of 27.5 points. They came to Peoria and lost by 35 points!

The opponent was extremely weak, but I'm quite happy with the end result of this one!

                  Mvsu 44 bu 77

The game as a whole could never have gone better. I really liked the message GF sent the starters early when they played a bit sloppy without playing with defensive intensity. Sit and think! TP once again was a beast, DSE's D is something special along with WL's ball hawking skills. Our D as I said in another post reminds me of those real good defensive SIU's teams. The games are not pretty but very effective. In short I'm very pleased with our team and as long as they keep playing hard I'll hold out hope for a special season. I'm a believer!

A very nice game indeed! Although MVSU is not a very good team.

I very much like the communication on the floor among the team this year!

Agree that this is reminiscent of the SIU defensive teams.

There are some nice offensive sets as well this year! We just need the players to hit the threes!

Chin Coleman seems to have a very active role with this team. I very much like seeing him active along the bench.

Nice W' for the Braves but most happy with the play of Bell.....thinking he should see the court more often and also fun to see Wells go up against some other bigs under the big lights!
