  • Grades for Valley Teams (early December)

There are a few teams that I feel have overachieved in the early going, and about the same amount who have underachieved.

Share your thoughts...and GRADES that you would give to each school in the Valley, based on expectations heading into the season, performance vs. varying opponent-levels, and obstacles a team may have had to overcome (ineligibility, injury, etc.)

I'll start from the Head of the Class:

A : Wichita St. - Who would have thought that we'd see an 8-0 start out of the gates? Not even Shocker fans, who knew there would be talented newcomers, but thought they would go through growing pains...not to say they won't during league play, but they have been in tight road games early on and have prevailed. This is a pretty deep team coached by a guy that knows how to get the most out of his players who buy into his system.

A- : Creighton - just 1 hiccup on the way to a fine season by the #16 Bluejays. They have proven to the basketball world that they are legit and that DM is a game-changer. They may be missing PG Young, but it seems they have been clicking on all cylinders without him.

B+ : Bradley - With only 1 sub-par performace in memory, and possibly a couple mediocre performances, the Braves are off to a faster start than most expected. They are playing with a team-first mentality and are getting key contributions for numerous guys who have struggled in the past. A big key has been forcing way more turnovers than giving up. They have found a winning formula that doesn't rely on perimeter shooting, an evident weakness on the team.

B+ : Southern IL - A couple convincing wins by the Salukis and a couple relatively close losses to quality opponents have given hope to fans that rebuilding may not be as long as expected. Much like Bradley, they are showing they can hang with a lot of teams and are not shoe-ins for the Thursday play-in games.

C+ : Evansville - Hard to judge what the results would have been with a healthy Colt. Getting injured in the middle of the game vs. Buffalo was a detriment to the Aces, and then it took a couple more games to get back on track offensively. It appears they have found a groove now and should be tough to beat in the Valley as long as Colt provides the expected horse-power!

    Remaing Valley grades:

    C : Indy St

    C- : Drake

D+ : ISU-red - Would be a "B" had they taken care of Wyoming after building a comfy 19 point lead! They have hurt the Valley with 2 games they should have won...shame on you Redbirds!!

D : UNI - not looking like a contender at this point, though I think they'll get it together by this time next month. Another team that could have helped the league, but went a disappointing 0-3 in the Battle 4 Atlantis tourney.

F+ : Bad News Bears - nobody knew much about Lusk's team, but I would venture to say nobody imagined they'd be this bad! Still without a win vs. a DI school. How far the Bears have sunk since the 1st place finish less than 2 years ago. Bet they're begging for Barry back.

When I have a bit more time I'd like to grade BU on different aspects of their game to date: offense, defense, back court, front court, bench, schedule, coaching and last but not least fan support (the 6th man).

can't disagree -none of the Valley teams are horribly underperforming (except Missouri State) - even SIU has won the ones they should...

but as I have felt right form the start - except for Creighton and their performances against a quality schedule...
every other Valley team is and has benefitted from soft scheduling...so it is very difficult to know how to grade them..

LittleBrave - are there any teams besides Creighton who have good, unexpected, or upset wins??
Even Creighton has only done what one might expect - and beaten teams who are lower in the rankings...
Thus if all the MVC teams are just beating who they should beat - then how can they get "A's" which to me signifies outstanding performance - considerably better than expected...

I still say the Wichita St. win over VCU will be big before all is said and done. Heck, maybe Iowa will surprise people and have a good year since our teams beat them routinely.

anyone wanting to watch a good game - Iowa State is playing at Iowa right now on Big Ten Network...
intense with Iowa playing very well and up 8 pts

iowa State is very athletic but a vaguely familiar look of all their guys always seeming to go one on one and solo - making few decent passes

            My BU detailed basketball grades
            • Offense - C without a shooter and high TOs I'm surprised I have not given it a D
            • defense - A I like what I see and it bodes well when we get into Valley play
            • back court - D too many TOs and cannot shoot the 3. We are also not doing a great job shutting down the other teams 3 point shooting.
            • front court - A Could not be happier with what they are giving us. WE needs to watch those silly fouls going forward and JP needs to continue his progress.
            • bench - D We will need a bench going into Valley play or else we're in deep trouble. Fatigue will get you every time.
            • schedule B - Not great but where we need it this year so far to get ready for Valley play
            • coaching A - I like what I'm seeing from Coach Ford. He has a nice system which I can see with the right players it will be fun to watch. I also have not questioned his play calling too much except one thing.
            • Fans F - We start every year with a great base of fans but the other fans who make up the rest are not doing their end. We have seen what a crowd can do for this team during the Michigan game. No excuses going forward I hope.

I can see us improving as the year goes. I'm hoping we can fix our TO problem which will make our offense a ton better. I'm not betting that our outside shooting will improve but as long as our D plays with energy we should be able to score easy baskets and limit the other teams from scoring. The bench has not really contribute but I believe the talent is there. I believe we have a chance of not playing on Thursday but it will take a consistent effort night in night out, protecting the ball, having the bench step up and playing as a team!

            Go Braves!

You got to give the Fans at least a D just for showing up for the Michigan game.

SFP - if any other Valley team had back to back last place finishes accompanied by multiple home 30-pt blowouts - would they still be drawing 6000, 7000, and even 11,000??
I think not - which leads me to say that Bradley fans are still the best in the whole midwest!

+1. Only thing that upset me was that ISU outdrew us last Tuesday and that doesn't happen very often.

Agree tornado. Many comparable schools to Bradley draw much less than 6,000 per game. In fact, according to this article -- http://bigskyconference.blogspot.com...ttendance.html -- many teams in conferences just below the MVC level draw fewer than 2,000/ game. Kudos to Bradley and Peoria for having the loyal fans that they have. No doubt winning will correct BU's steadily sagging attendance as I find attendance figures typically lag by one year and are based upon the previous season's success.

Good job on the rest of your grades here SFP! I agree with your assessment.

I guess I have a higher expectation from our overall fan. I'm not grading them compared to any other fan except what we have had in the past. In reality the F is for the students. This is their team more then anyone else and it would be nice to see them get behind their fellow students.

If I went into details of fans grades here's what I'd give:

                      Alums - A+
                      Community members - A+
Students - Incomplete which drags down the whole grade for everyone else.

BTW I understand the losing thing but regardless, a true fan follows their team no matter what. Just look at all those Cubs fans!

yes - and this may be the very first time ever that has happened...
which all the more says that it is foolish to take Bradley's awesome fans and longtime local fan-interest for granted...
some of these crowds, as I have said, are perhaps the smallest Bradley home crowds since we played in the armory....so why isn't that getting a bit more attention and why isn't there a little bit more effort to halt the skids???
One more time - if a ship is steering right for the rocks and is about wreck then why are people either ignoring it or blaming the guy who was one of the staff members two years ago?
Perhaps when the home crowds drop under 3200 then someone besides me will wake up and notice.....oops, may be too late.......I guess it already happened....

My guess -We have finished last for the past two seasons, and were picked to finish near the bottom of the valley again. Combined with teams people don't really care to see (Michigan excluded, of course), it doesn't surprise me at all that our attendance is low. Fans in Peoria are not dumb. They are not going to come out to see a visiting team they care nothing about if Bradley isn't very good. And Bradley needs to prove that they are good first after the past couple years.

Hmmm, A+ plus A+ plus incomplete divided by 3 doesn't average out to an F.

Seriously, I would give the fan base a C for two reasons. First many fans are smart to sit and wait to see if we will at least be more competitive. So far so good on that front. I think some fans will be back if we can get to 8 wins before the Valley season begins. These next two cupcakes don't help, but were needed to get us to Vegas.

Second, the fans who do show up at least try to get the crowd into the game. It doesn't help if there are people telling others to sit down, but even last year against UNI, the crowd really got loud during Bradley's furious comeback. I've been to many games in the past, and I know the Civic Center can get loud. More wins will take care of this as well, but my hope is that fans get into the game when the team is trailing, which will help the team as they try to win. Waiting for a dunk or run in order to start cheering is actually kind of counterproductive.

Agreed SFP about the students not showing up. That was great to see so many there for the Michigan game. They however need to show up even against the Georgia Southern's and Tennessee-Martin's of the world. Duke students show up en masse against teams like these as they do against North Carolina. That needs to happen here too.

Know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I get a little tired of comments about the crowd getting into the game. At the Michigan game the crowd was as great as any I have seen at Carver, until the timeouts started. During the first timeout I though Arthur Murray was going to come out dancing to the music the band played. And with all the promotions after that the crowd was denied a chance to stay in the game. Darn, I didn't win a free taco, who's cares. My section didn't win a free pizza, who cares. The kid I was rooting for as he raced down the court trying to put on a uniform didn't win, who cares.
