  • New Bradley Nickname

I know there already is a thread that started with the link to this article, but I did not want to take away from the well-wishes for Rob and his family.

I did want to start some commentary regarding the possibility of a new Bradley Basketball nickname to join the likes of The Hawk, Squeaky, JJ, The Sheriff and The Predator. How does everyone feel about "El Hombre" for Dyricus?

Geno's explanation of Coach Hunter's use of the term to describe similar type of play DSE has displayed this season provided a great press conference moment Tuesday night.

    I think it's a cool nickname.....but

-- are you sure in this day & age of uber-sensitivity and everyone claiming victim-status, that we're not going to get complaints
from the very people who bullied Frito-Lay from using the Frito Bandito - since it portrayed Mexicans as robbers and bandits...

isn't that the idea here - that DSE is piling up the STEALS....so calling him a Spanish/Mexican nickname might be thus interpreted...

the Latinos are already in an uproar over these pictures...

BTW -- Bradley leads the Valley as a team in steals, and DSE leads in individual stats at 3.1 spg - Dyricus is 7th nationally in spg and 5th nationally in total steals

While the number of steals Dyricus has accumulated is significant, the hombre description really was in reference to the way in which he has gotten many of those steals - by manning up and just taking the ball away from his opponent. But a point well taken.

On a PR front I would not worry too much on the latino front on the term 'El Hombre'. Just like I'd hope the Anglo community would not get upset if he was called 'The Man".

This PC craze has taken a dimension of its own.

Let's go for it! DSE will not be remembered to the degree that others you mentioned will, but if we start the nickname now, it will give BU fans more opportunity to use "El Hombre" so that he will be associated with it. I think it's an appropriate name for DSE, as this year, he has made a point to be the bigger man and take what belongs to hime - the ball! And I think he's shown a certain toughness in his BU hoops career that could make him "El hombre". I think this would be warmly accepted even in a latin-american country for a gringo if they think highly of an athlete who represents the team they root for well.

Another possiblity could be "Space Invader" but maybe that could be reserved for a Big in the future who takes up a lot of space and dominates in the paint.

              Just my bluntly honest opinion!

Hombre seems IMHO a tired and forced type of nickname. Remember Albert Pujols is nicknamed "El Hombre". Why not use Dave Snell's nickname of "Rique" for Dyricus. At least that is original and like most successful nicknames such as "The Hawk" , has something to do with the person.

                    Disagree.

What I would say is this. Players in the past with popular nicknames have usually won more than 30 games in their career. They've done that in one or so years.

Ever play in team sports? Most players where I played had a nickname regardless of record. Now did it catch on to people outside of the team? In other words nicknames have nothing to do with won loss. Catching on outside of the team may. Why the negativity?

I'll go along with 'El Hombre' for DSE,

                        IF,

Will Egolf can be 'The Avalanche' or 'Whiteout'...

                        AND

                        Prosser can be 'The Silo'

Sorry. "Whiteout" is obviously racist. Doesn't matter he is from Alaska.

I agree with JMM28. This is meant as no disrespect to DSE (or BP) but I do not believe he is worthy of being given a "marketed" nickname. The guys mentioned by Bobby Parker -- The Hawk, Squeaky, JJ, and The Sheriff -- were all superior players that earned and deserved to go down in Bradley lore with a unique and catchy nickname. Mind you, a nickname that was never "forced" on the public by the Bradley PR machine.

My list of completely useless nicknames for our Braves:

DSE - The Bandit -- steals
WL - The Squeeze -- lemon (couldn't come up with anything else)
                              JE - Elmer - glue
TP - The Fencer - play on his last name
JP - The Artist - works well in the paint
WE - Pops - age reference
JG - Shooter - Happy Gilmore reference
JC - Bobby - reference to the youngest of the three Brady Bunch brothers
SS - Squared - name reference
                              NW - E.T. - extra tall
MK - Poseidon - the newest bomber that Boeing built for the U.S. in 2009

                              I'm sure I missed a few...
