The Illini were hot from three tonight, and finally put the game away in the final 5 minutes.

Illini go to 8-0 with a 75-62 win

Big Ten are up 6 wins to 4 but the two games still in action have Penn State going to lose to BC and then Duke is battling Ohio State so if Duke wins then the Challenge will be 6-6

Heading into this contest, Illinois was leading the country in 3 point FG made per game at 10.9. I see that they knocked down another 14 last night.

On another note, I don't know if he's a late-bloomer or if he just has a new found confidence with John Groce, but Tyler Griffey has scored in double figures in 7 of 8 Illini games.

Griffey is a good player - if he was on a good mid-major team he'd be their star, they'd be 6-0, ranked, and he'd be getting national attention...
..all the more reason good players need to keep their mid-major options open.

I don't disagree in that in most cases kids reach beyond their recruiting center and take the highest level offer (i.e. Matt Roth). However, in Griffey's case, he had offers from Kansas, Missouri, Stanford, and Purdue.

So instead, he's 7-0, nationally ranked, getting attention, on a major program who is much more likely to go far in the NCAA tourney, scoring double digits, and is going to be playing against competition the likes of the #1, #3, #4, and #11 in the country. I love mid-major basketball, but it's hard to fault Griffey for his choice right now. He clearly didn't shoot to high.

My point was that he would have had to pass on 4 other major/high majors to accept an offer to a mid-major.

maybe so but he had to wait 4 years and still barely gets mentioned as an afterthought and hardly ever as a key component of his team...
PLUS - had Leonard & Richmond not gone - Griffey might still be playing deep backup minutes

I'm in agreement with you... I think Griffey is showing he deserves to be playing at the highest level.

It's so funny how the BU/Illini recent teams have been so similar. Great success, (UI 05, BU 06), followed by a steady decline, new coaches brought in and currently have the teams playing well. As a huge fan of both, I am enjoying this year!

I was a huge fan of JL and BW, but I am very happy with what the new coaches have done turning things around.

                        Keep on rolling!
