Northern Iowa loses their third game in three days, this time 52-47 to Memphis. A very disappointing weekend for them. UNI still goes to George Mason and #18 UNLV, and have home games against Iowa and St. Mary's. They better win 2 if not 3 of those 4 to even have a shot at an at-large bid. Otherwise, if they win the Valley, they will pull a Creighton from two years ago and be the second Valley regular season champion in three years not to be invited to the Big Dance!

Snell and Klein did give the Valley props during the game though by saying that the Valley is so strong at the top that there will be chances for UNI and others to gain NCAA Tournament resume type wins within conference play. That's very optimistic for them to say that, but I don't think the Valley will be as strong as it was in 2006. And if UNI is one of those top 4 deep teams that they talked about, then of course they can earn those types of wins over the other three teams. Yes, everyone will play Creighton twice, and the way Wichita St. is going, they could be ranked as well before long. But I would not want to take a chance with conference wins because who knows how well WSU and Creighton will play once conference play gets going. Creighton should be a shoo-in for the NCAA Tournament, but you never know what could happen if injuries strike and/or they get into a bigger slump than they went through last year.
Also, even if UNI snags a couple of good Valley wins, their top 50 record may be pretty bad if they keep losing these non-conference games. That's what kept Northwestern out of the tournament last year. Plenty of games against the top 50, but only one or two wins out of all of them.
