Another chance for Northern Iowa today, this time against Stanford starting shortly. Stanford is a team projected to finish anywhere from a marginal NCAA Tournament team to mediocre again, so a win for UNI against this team won't have the same punch as it would have had they beaten Louisville last night, especially considering Stanford hasn't beaten anyone good yet and has a bad home loss to an albeit dangerous Belmont on their resume! But this still could end up a very solid and important win for the Panthers if they are on the NCAA Tournament bubble come March. I think this one is very winnable for UNI, but they better shoot a lot better than they did last night!

Also a big game for Creighton against Wisconsin. Creighton may get an at-large birth just via winning the conference and winning the "eye test". But they can't take that chance, especially depending on where the Valley ends up ranking this year. This would be the marquee non-conference win that Creighton needs, especially since their non-conference schedule is slightly softer than some other teams in the Valley. So we'll see who wins out today, the offensive minded Bluejays, or the always defensive minded Badgers. I think Creighton's potent offense will score a fair number of points against Wisconsin, but can their defense be good enough to keep Wisconsin from scoring enough points in a potentially defensive battle? We'll see, but this game will go a long way in giving Creighton some great experience against the types of teams they might see in the NCAA Tournament.

And not to leave out Illinois St. and Drake, but both teams have winnable games against UAB and Rice respectively. I don't expect Drake to do much this year, especially with their injury issues, but a win against California last night would have helped the Valley RPI tremendously. Gotta get that win against Rice though.

I am expecting a 3-1 showing by the Valley today, but hoping to go 4-0.

      2-2 would be very disappointing.

          I'm prepared to be disappointed.

I still think Drake and ISU should win, and Creighton is more than capable of beating Wisconsin. But I can see all three losing too! Obviously for the Valley, all three teams need to win. But the most important of these games will be for Creighton so that they can get their signature non-conference win out of the way early.

Without having seen the game, it looks like a very disappointing effort by UNI in the second half.

I think Creighton and illinois state should win their games.

I can easily see Drake losing theirs.

Rice doesn't seem like they are that great of a team. But Drake has the injury bug we had a few years ago, so they may be big trouble. Either way, tonight's game is a game they have to win or their season could get ugly in a hurry!

I guess this is what I'm expecting of them this season.

That's a nice win for the Redbirds, but probably not a resume enhancer unless UAB competes for the CUSA championship. But obviously some great defense on ISU's part with those 27 turnovers!

UAB had not been challenged much having played three super-ultra cupcakes..
Young-Harris (not DI, Navy, & Prairie View A&M - not one of which will likely be associated with an RPI better than 325...
It'll be surprising if they finish anywhere near .500 against teams in their conference

In their first two games against as DII and Navy they committed 22 turnovers in each game

Well that's not too good. I guess I'm thinking back to over a decade ago when they were a consistent 20+ win team that made the NCAA Tournament quite often.

I'm confused....this is the healthiest any Drake team has been in at least the past 3 seasons. Only injury right now is Madison, and he was unlikely to get much PT anyway.

I apologize. I thought I read somewhere that one of their best players was injured over the summer. If not though, they still have to contend with the loss of Rayvonte Rice who transferred out of the program, per ESPN's Summer Shootaround of the Valley earlier this summer:

                              Drake

Best-case scenario: The Bulldogs have quietly hovered around the .500 mark in the four years since Mark Phelps took over for Keno Davis. Will 2012-13 be the year they get over the hump? The transfer of Rayvonte Rice (who averaged 16.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season) sure didn't help, but versatile forward Ben Simons (a 6-8 42.5 percent 3-point shooter) does return, supported by a cast of capable returners and seven newcomers, including two juco transfers.

Worst-case scenario: It's easy to see this team taking a step back without Rice. If Simons and Jordan Clarke have similar seasons to 2012, that's all well and good, but it's not clear that that will be enough to lift Drake out of the 18-win region and into legitimate MVC contention. The worry is that Drake simply is what it is.

Losing a 16.5 point scorer cannot be helping Drake right now, and it seems like they will still struggle this year. But my mistake for citing injuries.
