It turns out Jack Taylor's 71 point game Friday was an off-night for him. He scored 109 points yesterday in Grinnell's 173-123 win over Crossroads College, and boosted his average to 90 points per game. He was 35 for 70 overall, 24 for 48 from three, and 15-17 from the FT line.
Taylor had 70 shot attempts to go along with 17 free throws, yet he had only 2 assists, 1 turnover, and no fouls in 29 minutes. The other 4 starters were 7-18 for the game.

Grinnell is now 2-0, and Crossroads fell to 0-9.
Crossroads College had a player who was 25 of 27 from the floor and scored 50 points, most of them layups. He did not even attempt a three point shot.
Crossroads had 34 turnovers to only 7 for Grinnell.

If someone has never seen Grinnell play they should go to Knox in Galesburg when they come to town. They are a real treat to watch. Teams have to prepare for them completely different than any other team. They press all game rotating 5 guys in every 1 1/2 minutes or so. They will give up a 2 point shot and come back to shoot a 3. Their idea is to shoot more times and the percentage will make up the differance.

        they attempted 1236 3-pointers last year - about 50 per game -
we attempted about 16 per game last year so at that pace it takes us about 3-4 years to shoot that many

My son and I went to Jacksonville today to see Jack Taylor and Grinnell College take on Illinois College. Taylor scored a "measly" 29 points in leading Grinnell to a 132 to 126 victory. If you get a chance to see one of their games I highly recommend it. They play later this season at Monmouth College and also at Know College. It is a brand of basketball like you have never seen before. It was like we went to a track meet and a basketball game broke out. The fast pace did not stop until the last minute when Illinois College was intentionally fouling. Everybody on the floor shoots the 3 and is not bashful about it. ESPN 3 televised the game with a gym attendance record of 1503. Most of the game it was 5 in 5 out substitutions and frequently.

lefty might have more to add but -- The Olivet Nazarene women's team plays a similar style - they have played eight games already and average 108 points per game...
They have already shot 440 three point shots - 55 attempts per game, virtually identical to the number that Grinnell shoots per game...

Last night in Grinnell's 122-92 victory over Monmouth at home......
Jack Taylor with 41 points on 10-23 fg, 7-19 3fg, 14-18 ft in only 16 minutes! Another impressive stat is Grinnell's relatively low turnovers of 12 considering the controlled chaos of style they play.

Very difficult style to play and defend. They lull you into speeding up your tempo and that is exactly what a team should not do. They need to play a more controlled tempo, slow them down and make them play half court. Difficult to do so not always successful. The deceased former Knox College coach, Tim Heimann, was one of the few conference coaches that was fairly successful at it.

Do you think he would be "atheletic" enough to play for Bradley.

No. Probably not. He seems to be a great ball handler from the game I saw but he's only 5'10 and would probably have a tough time getting off shots on a team which plays half court offense.

37 assists in their 164-144 win........
GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's Patrick Maher '14 shattered the NCAA record, regardless of level, for assists in a game with 37 as the Pioneers rolled past College of Faith (Ark.) 164-144 Monday night at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell is 8-2 and Maher raises his assist average to 10.4 apg - some guy on the opposing team had a great game - 48 points & 17 rebounds!

Some people say their style of play isn't real basketball but it is still entertaining to watch.
