This apparently happened in a Belgian youth basketball league, possibly one that John Wilkins played in. 
Apparently they don't start teaching players all the rules until the next level.
In this video a player rebounds a missed free throw by an opponent, then as everyone else runs to the other end of the court, he inexplicably shoots repeatedly at the wrong basket! However, fortunately for his team, he misses point blank layups 4 straight times before one of his teammates runs back, blocks his 4th shot, and rebounds the ball away from the wrong-way player.
