  • NCAA & eligibility issues at IU

two of the newcomers at Indiana are apparently cleared to play in the exhibition game tonight but not yet cleared to play for the season...and NCAA yet to issue a ruling..
and there are rumors that one or both may not be cleared this year...

Peter Jurkin came from one of those questionable prep high schools and Hanner Perea moved from Columbia to a small school in Alabama to the same prep school that Jurkin went to,
then was at La Lumiere (tuition is over $42,000 per year!) last year but...
there were plenty of questions how all his expenses were being paid (possibly by AAU insiders who were acting as agents? - one of whom even got a job as an assistant at Indiana).
AAU coach, foundation leader acknowledges paying for flights, providing gifts

The coach of a top AAU team also runs a nonprofit foundation that mixes basketball and education -- but are the connections too friendly with some collegiate programs?

I suspect the NCAA smells a rat in all this and may declare Perea ineligible...

btw this same "charitable" organization that funnels these kids to and pays their exhorbitant prep school costs - then helps funnel them to colleges, has been discussed before and so incredibly many of their kids end up being disqualified.
Decatur Christian was full of 'em and almost none of them panned out........

NCAA does rule that Perea and Jurkin accepted impermissible benefits...they both must sit out the first 9 games of the season as penalty.

Not a horrible penalty - they really don't miss any critical games...
This is still getting off pretty easy as we all know that those kids' $40,000 per year tuition was also being paid by someone else - and that "benefactor" was never made known but likely had something to do with where the kids ended up play basketball in college.

but - if you are an ACC team - the NCAA will always give you what you want...
...all you have to do is ask......

IU appealed and the ruling on the appeal came down and the suspensions to Jurkin & Perea are upheld...

but the NCAA stated specifically in this current ruling that those two players were specifically given $6,000 - $8,000 to lure them to Indiana..

        here's the wording from NCAA

        "(AAU coach) Mark Adams had......
"unique access and continuous involvement with the (Indiana University) men's basketball program."

(his son was an assistant coach there as did numerous of his associates work there - ***)

Adams signed financial documents for international players (who have landed at Indiana)..

..IU provided Adams with complimentary tickets then said such an action is permissible.
..the "approximately $6,000 and $8,000" received respectively by Jurkin and Perea were "recruiting inducements,"
a term the NCAA enforcement staff did not use in its original ruling.

The NCAA appeals committee said Adams provided recruiting inducements "on multiple occasions during the student-athletes'
recruiting, and included plane tickets, meals, housing, a laptop, cell phone and clothing."

I do not mind that kids like this are given a chance in life to excel but it would be nice if the NCAA would use its vast resources to create a program that helps the disadvantage so as to limit the influence of leaches and boosters on these type of players. If you ask me this is a loophole which will taken advantage of by certain teams. I'm just surprised we have not seen more of this type of behavior.

after all the NCAA action, the appeals then finally getting both Perea & Jurkin back from their NCAA penalties...
the TWO combined have played only a total of 89 minutes and have but four made shots ....
so it looks like a HUGE mistake to have played either and they should have been redshirted..
especially Jurkin who has only played 7 minutes total.
