  • 2012-2013 Exhibition games have started

Other than those summer exhibition tours....
Wake Forest - Anthony Fields' old team & not expected to compete for the ACC title - is the first team to get an exhibition game played among D-I schools - as they went to Canada and played two games against Canadian colleges Brock & Ryerson...and they were not easy wins.

Both games were similar - close at first, then Wake opening small leads and in the first game even getting a double digit lead....
..then the Canadian opponents battling back to make it pretty close down the stretch.
The 2nd game was even a Ryerson lead at half and really close most of the way.
Both games were just 2-3 possession, single digit games for most of the final 5 minutes, as Wake kinda had to play their many of their key players 25-30 minutes and right to the end to come away with close wins both times....

Eureka men's basketball lost their opening exhibition game vs. Windsor in Canada

and although this wasn't an exhibition game - it was a scrimmage...
Utah State held their intrasquad scrimmage - ex-BU commit Sean Harris worked out but didn't play - while his juco teammate Spencer Buttlerfield - was one of the stars - scoring 18 pts, hauling down 9 rebounds.

several teams playing exhibition games tonight...one notable close one was the Washington Huskies.....playing D-II Western Washington...
and struggling much of the way - the game even tied down the stretch...until finally Washington pulled away late to win 88-78
George Mason also barely got by Bowie State

      some reports & surprises...

North Carolina - despite their high ranking - they played a tiny DII Shaw and were LOSING well into the 2nd half until they finally took the lead for good and went on to win...

Utah State clobbered their opponent easily..76-44 over a good DII Grand Canyon team..

Pitt also struggles early against a DII opponent before pulling away

and Missouri State adds a player

It's funny how things work out sometimes. Wasn't Woods the better player in high school? Look at them now. I expect Abell will outplay Woods this year.

            In exhibition play..

SIU beat Lincoln (Missouri) 83-47, shooting 45.6% but only 26% from 3-pt.

Attendance was a little over 2000.

UNI ended up winning their exhibition game over Briar Cliff 84-48.
Nate Buss had 18, Seth Tuttle 9, attendance 2125.

Illinois beat Lewis 79-47, DJ Richardson had 12, Brandon Paul 9, Illinois was 9-18 from the arc...

Duke beats Western Washington 105-87 but enjoyed a tremendous 27-10 advantage in fouls called....sending Duke to the FT line forty times compared to just 9 times for WWU...

Duke was in the bonus within the first 6-7 minutes in each half but WWU never saw a bonus shot in the game!

            Valparaiso beat St. Joe's 90-62

Ex-Saluki Gene Teague scored 18 & had 8 rebs in Seton Hall's 113-72 win over Wilmington

Tulsa 60 - Emporia 49 - new coach Danny Manning's playing style was fast & furious but his players missed a ton of shots and barely had 20pts at halftime!
Of Tulsa's 10 players who played, only three connected on more than a single bucket...and virtually no contribution off the bench...

Dayton beat Findlay 77-58 - it was close for much of the 1st half - then about a 20-28 pt margin for much of the 2nd half...

BUT -- it turned out to NOT be so easy...............as Findlay battled back and got within 12 in the final 5 minutes....and this prevented the
Dayton subs from really getting much playing time....
...the stretch from 16 minutes down to 12 minutes where Findlay outscored Dayton 16-1.....they did it against Dayton's top players (Dillard, Price, Robinson, Benson, Oliver)
Dayton had to play their starters a lot...with all five starters in there in the final two minutes.....

Evansville beat University of Southern Indiana (D-II) 73-55.......
with Colt Ryan carrying the load scoring 33 pts.
They drew 7358, but this was a one-point game in the middle of the 2nd half before UE pulled away..

USI has one player that is familiar to many Valley fans - ex-ISU Redbird Kenyon Smith - who was just 2-7, 6 pts, 3 asst.

In the last couple years, this game between the 2 schools located in Evansville filled the Roberts Center with attendance over 12,000.

Missouri State beat the Missouri Western Griffons (I guess Griffons are somewhat like Gargoyles) last night in a good early test, 81-67, with the bench kinda bailing the Bears out...
the starters accoutned for only 36 points while one sub Gavin Thurman got 21 in just 21 reserve minutes.
Missouri State doesn't have much inside and I guess they know it - they were outrebounded and played almost the entire offensive game on the perimeter!

The game was close for almost a half with a couple turnovers helping MSU pull away a bit just before halftime then Missouri State was unable to add to their lead throughout the 2nd half actually getting outscored 33-28 over the final 18 minutes.
Here's maybe a marker on what to expect from MSU this year...
                    they shot 38 3-pt attempts!!!!
In fact - 70% of all their shot attmpts were from 3-pt range and they hit 40.9% of them - so we had better get our 3-pt defense ready!

Ex-BU recruit Coty Clarke made his debut in Arkansas' Red-White scrimmage and played 29 minutes, getting 8 pts on 3-8 and 11 rebs - he had 4 TO in UA's 85-75 scrimmage "White" beating "Red". Ex-BU and ISU recruit BJ Young went 13-20 and had 28 points/4 asst!

Ohio State needed 25 pts from DeShaun Thomas & still struggled to put away NAIA Walsh 83-71 - Walsh hitting 50% from deep..
Sports Illustrated ran this story and said Ohio State beat WAGNER -- but they have since been alerted to their error.

Michigan State beat Rollie Massimino's Northwood 85-57 - Northwoods' 6-8 senior Masse Doumbe had 20 pts & 14 rebs!!

Purdue struggled a bit to beat Montevallo.

In new head coach FRANK MARTIN's debut at South Carolina, the Gamecocks needed a buzzer beater to fall to beat Kentucky Wesleyan 68-67...
Coach Martin played the starters 38-39 minutes!!! Hey Coach! It's a freakin' exhibition!!!

Florida State edged Lincoln Memorial (no, not the one from Springfield)
with Bloomington native Kiel Turpin, past juco Player of the Year while at Lincoln College - had 6 pts & zero rebounds - not a great start for the 7-footer!!

Kansas beat Emporia 88-54 with freshman Perry Ellis (ex-Shocker recruit) netting 15 pts, 7 rebs off the bench & ex-BU recruit jamari Traylor starting and getting 6 pts on 3-4.

                    Oakland beat Davenport 80-56

SEMO won their exhibition against someone named Ouachita Baptist and drew over 1200 - ouch..

Loyola Marymount beat Point Loma one of their new freshmen is Adam Drexler - son of Clyde...

one more...involving ex-BU recruit Matej Buovac-

He played in the Red-White intrasquad scrimmage for New Mexico State...
he got 4 pts and was not noted to have done much to get any more press than that...
New teammate at NMSU Sim Bhullar - the 7-5 350 pounder had 7 pts and 5 blocks

WIU won their exhibition game and ex-BU recruit Michael Ochereobia was a ton...
playing only 15 minutes in his first college game ever - he scored 9 pts & hauled down 9 rebounds...and blocked three shots as well...
in one four minute stretch in the 1st half he grabbed five rebounds - almost as many as Bradley had as an entire team over 20 minutes in the first half against Upper Iowa.

SIUE beat Greenville and Harvey, IL native, George Washington transfer tim Johnson had a great game - 27 pts (on 12-19) and 15 rebounds

UC-Davis clobbered the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 82-50 with Corey Hawkins having a nice debut - 19 pts, 6 rebs...

Indiana State beat Lewis 79-66, ex-BU recruit Justin Gant started and scored 8 - the Sycs were just 3-17 from 3-pt range.

Michigan beat Northern Mich. 83-47 with Max Bielfeldt getting 11 minutes & Grabbing 3 rebs. but playing behind 2 or 3 other big guys

Minnesota won their exhibition and demonstrated that they were not going to discipline Trevor Mbakwe at all despite his numerous arrests and legal issues.

Lastly - SIU's Barry Hinson talks about their upcoming game against Upper Iowa - who they call "Valley-like"...
and Barry confirms multi-arrested Desmar Jackson is going to start the game...

one more game in addition to all those above that have slight relevance to BU...

Northwoods (NAIA) - coached by Dick Versace's good buddy Rollie Massimino - played Kentucky and lost 93-61, as they just didn't have NBA talent all the way down the bench...but...

but.. one of the best best players on the floor was Northwoods' big man Masse Doumbe ...with 25 points and 7 rebs!

UK went largely with their five starters (starters played 133 out of 200 minutes despite the blowout and were still in the game with a 35-point lead in the final 2 minutes of the game...) - and yet Northwoods hung within single digits almost 'til the end of the first half.
