Gophers coach Dan Monson told his coaching staff this morning that he is resigning, according to a member of his staff, who also said that assistant coach Jim Molinari will become the interim head coach.
The university has called a 3 p.m. press conference.
That is big news! Any chance that Molinari would be offered the job permanently if Minnesota say finishes around .500 in the Big Ten?
No.
Well, ESPN.com is reporting that Molinari is the successor to Monson. They did not specify permanent or interim. That almost sounds like he's got the job for as long as they see fit.
Minnesota coach Dan Monson is resigning
and assistant Jim Molinari will become the interim head coach, The Star Tribune of Minneapolis reported Thursday, citing a team source
And this one too:
"... sources said Thursday that Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi told Monson that either he had to go or there would be pressure they both may be out."
Mo is there to finish out the season. You don't promote within when the ship is sinking (or sunk in this case). I'm sure all of the assistants have their resumes up to date.

Could you cite evidence of this?
Tks.
No evidence. Just interpreting the ESPN.com article. It was interesting that they did not use the word interim. I suppose this will all sort itself out in just a few minutes during their press conference.
Even if Mo doesn't get the interim removed, if he has success it will help him get a head coaching job. Remember last season with Andy Kennedy and Cincy. Kennedy is now the HC at Ole Miss. Ole Miss is currently 6-1 too.

When Bill Frieder was fired during the regular season at Michigan in 1989, assistant Steve Fisher took over and guided the team to an NCAA Championship.
Fisher was then given the chance to be the head coach, not just the interim coach as he proved with his performance he could lead. That could happen at Minnesota, but they'd have to win 15 of the next 20 games.

Have you seen Minnesota play this year? If Mo wins the National Title with that team KK owes him an apology. They are disgusting.
