    Washington TOC

Here is a great chance to see some players who may end up as Braves.

The tournament committee has assembled a tournament that has very talented teams, that are well coached, that will lead to some very entertaining games.

The City of Washington Invitational, is an eight team tournament that is loaded with quality teams and a ton of Division 1 recruits. It will be the most competitive TOC field Washington has faced since the TOC was created in 2006.

Representing the Chicago area is St. Rita, which features 6'6'' sophomore Charles Matthews that is already being hailed as a high major player. St. Rita also has a Bradley recruit that just recently visited the Braves, 6'7'' Victor Law.

The national teams are well rounded and have Division 1 athletes. Greenwood (Amanda Elzy High School), Mississippi is the defending 4A Sate Champs and have a junior guard that has committed to Mississippi State and an explosive wing that has committed to Middle Tennessee State. They also have a 6'8'' post that is being recruited by mulitiple high majors.

Hazel Green High School was the runner up last year in Alabama, their state championship defeat was to Montgomery Carver, which defeated Washington last year 43 - 42 in the TOC. They are athletic and loaded with skill. Hazel Green has three Division I caliber players and a 6'5'' post player that is Purdue bound named Parker Cothren.

South Miami appears to be the team to beat in the TOC. Antravious Simmons is a 6'9'' post that has committed to play at VCU. They have recently added two transfers that have made an already loaded roster even more potent.

Washington and Peoria Notre Dame also appear to be very talented and it should be interesting to see how Illinois basketball matches up against these very good national teams. Notre Dame and Washington also play each other in the matchup games.

Great chance for our local basketball fans.

This is a GREAT tournament put on right in our backyard. I know I've seen Tom Creen (IU fans), Bruce Weber (Illini fans), and several other division 1 coaches from around the country in attendence, but there has never been a big BU coach/fan following? Do you think Geno will attend this year? We have a recruit in this year's Tournament...I'd like to think we would have some representation from our fans and coaching staff for this kid. Are we recruiting anyone else playing in this tournament?

Has there always been only 8 teams?

seems like I remember more than that at one point....?

If Charles Mathews is there the Illini should be there..if they hadn't seen him recently

The previous TOC tournaments had many more teams, more than 20 teams divided into several divisions in most years.

Let me clarify to the best of my ability.

I'm involved with another high school tournament and we've attempted to bring in teams from other states. It gets very difficult because of each states' rules regarding play. Some have mileage restrictions, some have contiguous state restrictions, etc.

TOC brings in teams from mulitple states. The rules make it such that the TOC breaks teams into different brackets in order to follow each team's state specific rules. In other words, you have multiple tournaments within the TOC. The 8 teams referred to above are in the "City of Washington Invitational" bracket.

              Hope this helps.

I kinda feel embarrassed for Central Illinois - we have one of the premier high school basketball tournaments in the world - right here and get such sparse coverage in the media...

This tourney should have been FRONT PAGE with a big headline....
the Limestone-East Peoria game got that level of coverage with a picture as well...

Instead - back a few pages, a far smaller and less obvious story covered this tourney....

                      For those who didn't hear...
Washington beat their St. Louis opponent with Alec Peters scoring 25 of his team's 40 points - they'd better hope he doesn't get injured this season! St. Louis Mary Institute Country Day scored only 5 2nd half points.
Washington won 44-21...and outrebounded Mary 31-10!!

Richwoods lost to Milwaukee Riverside 48-45, with Preston Wells & Denzel Irving looking pretty good for Richwoods.

IVC lost to Rockville 56-43 but it wasn't even that close as IVC fell behind by 17 in the 1st half and by 21 in the 3rd.

other local games that are not part of this tourney...
Manual 73 - Illini Central 34 - big blowout five Manual players with 8 or more
                      Limestone 76 - East Peoria 40 - Hank Mathews 19 pts
Chance Meyer scores 28 for Midwest Central in a 79-68 win over Princeville
                      Dunlap 79 - Rochelle 55 - Alex Sorenson (BU recruit) 29 points! - Greg Graham's kid had 12
PCS 65 - Jeremy Crouch's Illini Bluffs 48 - RJ Carter 35 pts!! The kid can play should be a good D-II prospect and a straight A student.

One of the games that got no coverage was Chicago St. Rita beating Elzy (Mississippi State Champs) by 20....with Bradley recruit Dominique Matthews getting 26.

There are some highlights available here - the first one has Matthews hitting from the corner

they also televise several of the games live on that High School Cube site

but in the game of significance to Bradley fans...
BU recruit Dominique Matthews might have just blown up before our eyes...as he has another monster game.
Chicago St. Rita beats Hazel Green 68-59 with Dominique Matthews scoring 31 pts, grabbing 6 rebs!

St. Rita wins again, cruising over Champaign Central 59-44 - Dominique & Charles Matthews were like men vs. boys...

Dominique Matthews added 14 points and awesome defense

It would be nice to get these guys - they are each like a cross between Curtis Stuckey & AJ Guyton - they can play every aspect of the game...
