  • Marcus Sikes...what might have been...

Our biggest weakness is obviously our depth inside. The recruit we were so tantalizingly close to landing could have taken this team to another level this season. Marcus Sikes is currently averaging 13 ppg and 7 rpg for Cincinnati, playing 30 mpg, and shooting 55% from the field (including 64% on 3's). Man would that be a nice compliment to ZA to have.

Cincinnati is off to a 5-1 start but that's deceptive.
First, they have played nothing but extreme cupcakes, and have lost to one of them (Wofford) while getting a big scare from High Point, Central Michigan, and Oakland.
Last night against Oakland, Cincy didn't take the lead for good until late in the game.

Numerous Cincinnati players have been ruled ineligible or are injured, and last night Sikes played 30 minutes and scored one point and had 3 rebs.

Here are a couple pics of Sikes, go to #3 and #7

I would settle for Anthony Slack he seems to be playing pretty good at ISU.

I just saw a discussion on the Big East board, and it is pretty agreed that Cincinnati is the worst team in the Big East, starting off the league season losing at home to Rutgers by 12 and then to South Florida by 15.
They will probably also be bad next year and Marcus Sikes will have spent his two years playing on a last place team.
I saw Sikes when he was on campus and he is solid. I agree with the comment "what might have been".

I did some checking and found that Marcus Sikes has had some really good games, and also some where he's been AWOL.
He averages 9.3ppg, 5.9rpg, but only shoots 40% from the field and actually has attempted 44 3-pointers! He is fairly foul prone and has more TO than assists.
I am haiving 2nd thoughts as to whether BU really needs this.
These numbers won't even get a look from the CBA come draft day, so again I think the sentimant is correct, he aimed too high.
In their game against South Florida and in their nationally televised blowout loss to Memphis, Sikes looked horrible, a step slow, and was in foul trouble a lot.

So I guess the question is - would we have been better off with Sikes or Salley? Remember, we wouldn't have gotten Salley if Sikes accepted our offer.

The way Salley is coming on now and fitting in with the team, I'm not sure we aren't better off with Matt.

Hard to say what Sikes would do at BU. My guess is that Bradley may be a little more "structured". Maybe with Bradley's system he might have been more dependable on a night in - night out basis. At this point I think Matt Salley is doing a great job and I hope he has us all asking "Marcus who?" by the end of his BU career.

I LOVE how Salley is contributing! Keep it up Maddy!

That's the exact point I was making, as a counter to some who said we "wasted" a scholarship on Matt Salley.
Right after the Michigan State game where matt loooked bad and went scoreless, some people stated we had made a mistake in going after him.
Matt has since played a whole lot better, and maybe even better than Sikes has played in that interval.

Matt definately struggled big time at the begining of the season, but it seems that game-by-game he is getting better and developing a strong presence on both ends of the floor.

Matt is playing a lot better now and I would expect that as playing Jr. college ball and Div. 1 is so much different; I have said this before that players improve a lot with this coaching staff. I think Sikes should be the one saying he made the wrong choice and his team is going no where.
