I don't think this a problem exclusive to BU. There are quite a few universities built in urban environments which were started 100+ years ago when those neighborhoods were thriving. Now many of them are the only things worth going to in those neighborhoods. SLU suffers from the same problem. They have taken the approach of buying up every piece of property they can in order to buffer them from the bad areas and make the actual campus into a pedestrian mall with ornamental lighting and such.
A lot of this would be totally different if it were a Mr. Glasser instead of Mrs. (Dr.) Glasser.
Bradley is starting an escort service on campus and the surrounding areas called The Hilltop Safety Cruiser. It consists of "Specially trained students employed by the Bradley Police Department??™s Student Patrol" driving "a van that accommodates up to six passengers".-
Bradley was not where my child wanted to go, and many of the crime issues cited in this thread made me not push the issue. We visited Seton Hall, which is similar to Bradley in size and make up (maybe a little smaller footprint) and is in a questionable area, though better than Bradley IMO. They have totally fenced their campus, with two guarded vehicle entries and two card key pedestrian entries. Maybe time for BU to think of a similar approach, for at least the main area (old campus).
pretty soon - like some of the McDonald's in the high crime areas of Chicago (there's one near the Uniter Center) - they will have to replace all the windows - even the drive up window - with STEEL PLATES and just use a bank-teller-like sliding drawer to pass payment & food thru the robbery-proof barrier.

I always thought when I was a student that they start adding walls around the campus but I bet most of the problems are on the fringe of the campus. You would have to believe that Peoria would be safer then Chicago but somehow the political and economic conditions really must be atrocious. If I lived in Peoria I'd own a gun and I do not take guns lightly.

Yeah, blame politics and the economy. Gets old after awhile.
I'm not saying i agree with politics and the economy being the reason, but what do you think is instead?
Ask anyone from this area who is old enough to remember the days when you could park your car several blocks from the Fieldhouse with no problem. We used to walk from West Peoria, no problem. Ask the students who have been victimized what the one thing all the crimes have in common. I'll come right back at you, what do you think it is instead?

Interesting points you make... I remember as a kid walking with my Dad from wherever it is that we would park to games at the Fieldhouse. I would not consider today walking with my children more than a block from campus at 9:30 at night.

We used to walk down to Bradley Park, Lucky Lady, Rocky's and Jimmy's. We'd also walk a block or two down Main Street to a convenience store, or walk up Moss towards Jumers, or go to the McD's or the Doughnut shop on Western near the top of Bradley Ave... I guess you can't even do this any more?
To be honest I have only lived in the area for the last 3.5 years, but i have had no problems walking around campus, down farmington, or back up main street from the bars. But i also have not been stupid about it and when traveling at night i travel in groups and avoid situations that can cause problems. I'm not sure what has changed in the area but I've heard that the neighborhood just behind the mcdonalds on main is one of the worst in peoria...
