  • Stats among MVC Freshmen

Here are the up-to-date stats among the MVC freshmen layers.
It's a relatively down year for freshmen, as NOT ONE freshman is in the Top 10 of any major statistical category in the MVC, except Indiana State's Marico Stinson's 3-point shooting.

    ....................MPG...PPG...RPG...APG...SPG

    Stinson, InS....26.1..13.3...3.2...1.0...0.6
Holmstrom,InS.28.8..10.3...2.5...1.2...0.6 (missed 6 games due to injury)
    Young, DU......21.9...10.1..1.7...2.0...0.8
    Eldridge,ISU ...19.3...8.1...3.3...0.8...1.0
    Miles, CU........22.9...7.4...2.1...1.9...1.0
    Warren, BU... 16.8..5.7...2.1..1.0...0.8
    Eglseder, UNI ..7.8....3.4...2.5...0.0...0.1
    Mekel, WSU....11.9...3.2...0.8...1.5...0.4
    Granger, UE....10.9...2.9...1.7...0.4...0.2

    Jones, UNI....... 9.1..2.1...0.6...0.3...0.4
    Armstrong, SIU 4.5...0.4...1.4....0.0...0.4

Andrew Warren's 3-pt. shooting percantage of 51.7% is 3rd in the Missouri Valley (min. 1 3-pt FG made per game) and is tops among freshmen.

Andrew's overall FG shooting pct. of 50.8% (min. 3 attempts per game) is also TOPS among all MVC freshmen.

    Andrew's FT% is 76.2% 3rd among freshmen.

I looked back at all the previews that were reviewed by people on Bradley fans.
The different sources picked several different players as the likely Newcomer of the Year, and those selected were Gal Mekel, Ty Morrison (several people's pick), Jordan Eglseder (Street & Smith's Top Freshman, CBSSportsline's NOY & Sporting News NOY), Boo Richardson (Street & Smith's Top Newcomer), Osiris Eldridge (FoxSports NOY).

But five of the top six freshmen in the league were never even mentioned by one source or preview.
Stinson and Holmstrom of Indiana State, Drake's Josh Young, Creighton's Miles, and Andrew Warren.
Only Eldridge is on the map, and I wonder if a guy from a cellar dwelling team can win the NOY?
So who's the favorite right now?

Does anyone know if FOY in the Valley is based on full season stats (including pre-conference) or is it based solely on their stats in Valley play?

I was curious because Eldridge's #'s in Valley play only are pretty darned good. They are solid overall for a freshman, but especially so in Valley games. I was just curious if they were better than Stinson's or Young's.

I know Eldridge is around 12-13 ppg and over 5 rpg in Valley play. Eldridge and Dyer were the only bright spots for us on Saturday in Carbondale.

There is no specific rule limiting the FOY to performance just in conference games. However, I believe the selections are made by the coaches and the lead media guys in each city. Their selection would be heavily based on what they see in the conference games. In view of that, OE stands a good chance. However, if ISU finishes last, maybe that could hurt him.

I agree. Finishing last will only hurt his chances.

With these numbers I think it clearly will come down to Eldridge or Stinson. Stinson holds the edge with better overall season scoring and his team has a better record. Eldridge's Valley numbers are much better however. His rebounding really stands out.

The decision might very well come down to the results of the Redbirds trip to Terre Haute. The winner and the player that performs better head to head likely will take the cake. Stinson holds the edghe right now in head to head play.

Josh Young is the only other player that should receive any consideration.

I hope the 'Birds and Osiris finish strong. That would be something a little positive to have going into next season.

I actually think that Stinson is falling off a bit and will continue to do so, but.....
I think two other guys are in the mix with Eldridge.

Have you been reading any of the Drake game stories?

Josh Young is coming on strong, and was really the player of the game last night as the Bulldogs won a tough road game at UNI.
He has been Drakes leading scorer in several of their recent games.

Just read this, as the Des Moines Register labels Josh Young

"the front-runner for the Valley???‚¬?„?s freshman of the year award"

Since all the leading candidates except one play for teams at the bottom of the MVC,
just perhaps some who vote for this award will end up voting for Isaac Miles,
as he is a full time starter on a team that's battling for the Valley title.

By the way, the article linked above also quotes the Drake players as thinking they still have a shot at playing in the post-season.
Do they really think they have a shot at an NIT bid??
They are 4-10 in the Valley and even if they win out can not finish any better than 8-10 in the MVC. I really have my doubts that the NIT would take an 8-10 team from the Valley!
Maybe an 8-10 team from the ACC, but are these guys really convinced this can happen?
