And a few other similar shaped logos-

Step 1 is OK, nothing to jump up and down. I'm not sure how well the logo will translate to more merchandise sales or brand awareness. I'd have to say probably not a major impact at all.
When is the new mascot images coming out?"Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."

I almost forgot to comment on the new logo. It doesn’t do much for me, but at least it’s not purple/blue and orange. I agree it’s safe and “timeless”, but it seems like a wasted effort/opportunity to really take a chance on something fresh and innovative.
Is there more to come with a name change and mascot?

I like the new logo a lot.
Those who say it's "boring" or "bland" don't really understand much about what a good logo should be. Simple is almost always better. Many major universities are even more simplistic than our new logo. Nebraska has a simple block N, Wisconsin uses a simple W, Michigan has a fairly simple M, etc.

Michigans is a Simple M, but at least it has two colors going on.

My experience with logo creation (not too much actually) and observing how logos trend toward marketing, they are not so much for aesthetic pleasure as for association...though with college athletics, looking sharp and "hot" counts for something too - especially when pertaining to apparel.
I'm sure I could have made something much more appealing to the eye, but I'm sure there's much more to it. Not a big fan of the shield. Not too happy with this...but not going to sulk about it. More concerned about our hoops team this coming season.
