  • Dick Vitale calls recruiting "a cesspool'

    He describes the corruption..

    "a joke"
"scary to hear what is happening"
    "ethics mean zilch.."
"Many of the (AAU) coaches in these programs are peddling their players to the highest bidder."

    Dickie V's Comments

Unfortunately Dickie V has been one of the major contributor's to giving recruiting a bad name. He is constantly referring to PTP'ers and the like when commenting on high school players and never ever giving an honest assessment of their talent tor potential. Just because a player can slam dunk is hardly an indication of their talent to play the game at any level, yet Dickie V and others seem obsessed at such displays, especially in the various AAU tournaments.

Totally disagree on Vitale. He's doing his job with enthusiasm. If he's convincing us of these athlete's potential and talent then he's simply doing his job well. He's paid to create interest and make things exciting to watch.

I love Dickie V - he knows the game, loves the game, and the game loves him for what he's brought the past few decades. Can't imagine College hoops without him, even if he seems marginally biased towards the ACC, but that doesn't bother me. On the same token, he gives props to other Big and small schools/conferences much the same.

Couldn't disagree more. Dickie V is great for the game of College hoops. I understand some people do not like him and I think it has to do to with his love of the ACC. I can look past that. I admire his love for the game and how excited it makes him. I heard him speak at a Nike clinic on ESPN once and wished I would have taped it. He spoke to student athletes at a Nike camp and it was very moving. He was very geniune and had half the kids in tears. I'll never forget it myself.

I love Dickie as well. Sure he has some favorites but any game he does is with all kinds of enthusiasm and loves the fans as much as the coaches and teams.
I had seats on the floor about 20 feet from him at Freedom Hall with Louisville and Georgetown playing and whenever possible he was talking to fans and letting them take pictures and just having a blast

DV does serve a purpose and he is more good for college basketball than some broadcasters...

like most guys on TV he has his opinions but he sure uses his position to let you know what you should think..

but here's what I can't understand about him - one by one - and one after another -- every icon, every top person in the sport of college basketball gets exposed and gets caught cheating, lying, immorality, corruption......
... Kelvin Sampson, Pitino, Calhoun, Pearl, etc., etc....

and every time one of those very people Dickie has anointed with sainthood gets caught and disciplined for cheating - he just looks the other way and pretends he never painted those guys as freaking saints...

If Dick Vitale either had just shut up and been a broadcaster - or heaven-forbid actually used his airtime and platform to call out the cheaters and hold up for admiration the REAL hard working and honest guys in the sport, then the whole arena of amateur sports wouldn't be such a cesspool. I actually believe he's more a part of the problem than he is of calling out the problem.

While I agree he doesn't blast guys when they are caught...I have heard him recognize those who coach with integrity when the opportunity comes.
I don't think he's part of the problem, those guys are going to cheat regardless.

Dickie V's memory must be failing him. He seems to conveniently forget how he got some of the good players he got when he was the head coach at Detroit Mercy.
