  • Recruiting update from Dave Reynolds 8/2/12

Only 2 names mentioned as possibly visiting- Ben Moore and Sean O'Brien-

  • #3
I personally don't think it matters but Bradley offered Ben Moore much closer to July 1 than August 1. I like Ben Moore from what I have heard. Of the players BU has been tied to he is one I would like to get.

That said, I have never seen him or any of the other kids play so it is a total guess on my part. I just like that he is an athletic, active kid with his best ball ahead of him.

on a slightly different recruiting topic -- there's a rumor that Illinois has just landed a 2013 verbal from a PG..and that the kid is Top 40..
it is suspected that the player in question is either Tyler Ennis or Demetrius Jackson both ranked as high as #20
There is nothing solid - just a couple tweets and some board discussions

Meanwhile I saw this funny thread about how someone is trying to find some tiny act by Bruce Weber that might disqualify him from his $3.9 mil buyout

Ben Moore' name has been out there for a while - which is why he has more than a dozen offers, but he's really been blowing up --
There are a few new articles about him - if you're interested.....

          Some interesting numbers-
Last summer Dave Reynolds reported that "Freshman guard Jalen Crawford has recorded a team-best 43 1/2-inch vertical leap."

In the latest article from Dave, he reports that Walt Lemon measured a 47.5" vertical leap, and Jalen Crawford measured 46".

So Walt must have increased his vertical by several inches (more than 4 1/2 inches), and Jalen increased his by 2 1/2 inches. That is pretty amazing, and a bit unusual.

There are 2 standard ways to measure vertical leap- "standing vertical leap", or a "running vertical leap"? The above measurements must be running vertical leap. People also use different methods to measure vertical leap, so it is sometimes hard to compare records in this area. This stat is also one that seems to be exaggerated greatly by athletes who then refuse to actually be measured.

The vertical leap measurements for Walt and Jalen are a bit astonishing (47.5" and 46"), even if we assume they are running vertical leaps, which are always greater than a standing verticals.

Below are the best standing vertical leap measurements ever recorded at the yearly NBA Combines, which date back to 1991 (though vertical leap was not always recorded each year). It is assumed that NBA Combine measurements are carefully recorded, and players are probably at their peak and try their hardest.

Best standing vertical leap ever recorded at NBA Combines- 39.5" (Kenny George, 2001 and Nick Young, 2007)

Best maximum vertical leap (running) at NBA Combines- 45.5" (Kenny George, 2001)-

Cumulative Database from NBA Combines, which also shows the top max vertical was 45.5" by Kenny George in 2001.-
NBA Draft scouting reports, mock drafts, articles on NBA Draft Prospects. Extensive high school, NCAA and international NBA draft coverage.

So how unusual is it that Bradley currently has 2 players who have vertical leap measurements that exceed the best NBA Combine measurement ever recorded?

DC...you through me for a loop for a sec....Kenny George was like 7'7"...

I think you meant Kenny Gregory......I get your point there though

Yes, sorry for the mistake- I meant to say Kenny Gregory. Kenny George probably had the least vertical leap!

I think there are variants in the way to do the measurement - so when someone claims a vertical of over 45" it's probably being done different than the way the NBA did theirs.

I hear there were a couple recruits on campus today. Most of the players are gone until next week when fall classes start, but 'Cellus Sommerville, Daniel Ruffin, and some others were there to help fill out the teams.

It was reported in Dave Reynolds' column last week that Sean O'Brien was supposed to be on campus for a visit this past weekend. So maybe he was one of the visitors yesterday. The report we had was from someone at the open gym who didn't identify the recruits.

as noted elsewhere - at the time Sean O'Brien was visiting last weekend - BU was completely done with their summer session and have a week and a half before fall classes start...so most students and most of the players would not have hung around campus - (several are actively tweeting from vacation spots) and that might have made it tough for O'Brien to meet or scrimmage our current players.
