not since the 1912 Olympics have they actually been made of gold throughout - they are instead actually a solid blank of silver that is at least 92.5% silver then is plated with gold.
of course it would simply be prohibitive if they were all made of solid gold -- the estimated cost given almost 2000 gold medals awarded, they would need at least TEN kilograms of gold and that would cost millions...(perhaps $50 mil)
As it is - the gold plated ones still cost a lot but that cost is a guarded secret.
it is estimated that the raw metal value of each of the 2012 medals is...
Gold- $650 - would be $25,000+ if it were made of gold
Silver- $320
Bronze- $5
As to what a gold medal might sell for that's speculative and would depend on whose medal it is -
surely the golds won by Jesse Owens would bring more than some obscure kayaker's award...
