  • Tough language on NCAA cheating

"Big-time college sports are a sewer, due to a culture nurtured by the NCAA,
which has refused to drop a real hammer on any marquee program for 25 years.
During his presser, Emmert actually said this: "Football will never again be placed
ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people." I don't believe him
for a nanosecond. If he really wants to clean up the culture, the sanctions
forced on Penn State in this case will be the minimum placed on every program
where the culture is out of whack -- which is to say, just about every one.
Rampant cheating exists because there is no real penalty for breaking the rules.
Money trumps values and righteousness every time. Nothing has changed here.
Nothing. But the NCAA brass can go about thumping their chests and proclaiming
they stood up for goodness and virtue. Gag me."

On this topic, I completely agree with Mr. Wessler.

Yeah.. Let's face it. The main reason the NCAA punished Penn State is that everything is out in the open, and leaving an institution unpunished in this instance looks bad for the NCAA brand. $$$

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

also there was intense public pressure and media push for the NCAA to act - so they had to
I am curious as to why the same public and media don't seem to be so worried about the virtually identical crimes and coverup that happened at Syracuse...
Syracuse police say they are investigating an allegation that Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine molested a team ball boy for more than a dozen years beginning in the mid-1980s.

BUT -- in this case in Syracuse - the MEDIA knew about those charges and criminal acts against children as far back as 2001 and it was the MEDIA that remained silent and complicit -- so could this be the reason the media wants this one in Syracuse to just stay quiet and instead shine the light on the Penn State one to distract everyone?
A friend of former SU ball boy Bobby Davis says she repeatedly called the district attorney's office about the alleged abuse in 2002, but never received a call back.

The level of cover up at Syracuse wasn't even close to the level of cover up at PSU, from what I understand.

As for the NCAA, they handed down as many penalties as possible without using the death penalty, which would've cost the Big 10 several showcase games on TV and cost significant revenue loss for PSU and their opponents. So basically, they did everything possible short of actually starting to hurt the NCAA's revenue stream. Got it, Emmert.

+1 It also seems as if some of the Syracuse accusers change their story which doesn't help matters.

Trivia question - so just how badly did all those "sanctions" against USC actually hurt them....?
Remember - they are called "penalties" for a reason - those "penalties" were supposed to hurt USC, set them back and make them remember not to cheat again....

              Well - here's the answer-

The penalties were so minimal and ineffective that after
one down year that was going to happen anyway - they start this season as the top rated team

only 11% of D-I coaches have faith that NCAA even has the ability to catch the cheaters
