  • Salukis after a couple of the same players we are

  • #2
after observing a lot of articles and chatter lately I have a couple observations

-right now is the time to be making headway in Class of 2013 & 2014 recruiting.
Almost every Valley school and other in-state schools are filling their 2013 & 2014 recruiting classes and more news is happening every day. It's harder to get things done during the school year because the kids obviously have school obligations, but right now during the AAU season - RECRUITING is what it's all about.
The kids are literally out there on display and courting offers, trying to get noticed, etc. And there's no shortage of talent...remember - Nate Taphorn had nearly 20 other Illinois kids ranked ahead of him. One is AJ Riley.

-The Illinois Wolves are the best AAU program around and one of the best in the nation. In their U15, U16, U17 teams they have 3 DOZEN quality recruits - virtually all of them going to D-I schools. EVERY school around has Illinois Wolves kids or at least are in among the kids' top choices.
Recruiters HAVE TO get in on the Wolves - and stay connected - call the coaches daily and follow all those kids.
The main coaches at the Wolves are Dave Kleinschmidt, Mike Mullins, & Carl Maniscalco. All have strong Illinois ties and mid-major ties. This is a perfect setup for a school like Bradley - we NEED to be landing some of the Wolves kids.
However with the last two Wolves kids we had (Maniscalco, Devon Hodges) we likely didn't exactly boost the BU-image with those associated with the Wolves. So we have a little work to do.
Unfortunately, the fallout from changes made a year ago and again this past spring (word does get around and people remember) are still hurting us on the recruiting field.

-Our lead recruiters (head coach and a couple assistants) have to get some more Chicago-area kids - and Peoria-area kids. Even if they are not superstars, they will open the pipeline. I hate to see talk of how we are NOT recruiting the most talented kids that are right here in our own back yard. I hope to see some headlines soon that we are landing some commitments.
More than half the 2013 kids are still open and almost all the 2014 are, and hard work on the recruiting trail can still produce benefits.
Here's a Sun Times recruiting article from yesterday - dozens of top prospects mentioned - and also dozens of SCHOOLS that are offering and that those kids are leaning towards..
SIU, ISU, Creighton, Dayton, Saint Louis, NIU, WMU, SIUE, FGCU, EKU, Loyola, Miami (OH), LaSalle, North Texas and at least a couple dozen other schools are mentioned...
BUT -- can you guess who is not mentioned?? We need to be mentioned in Chicago - not just in the Peoria paper.

Might be tough with Carl as an assistant

might be - but you have probably talked with Carl - he's fair, he's been to some BU games since Sam has been gone - he's a BIG Bradley fan and loves the school - and it is definitely possible to get things going with them - but Bradley is mentioned so rarely in connection with Wolves kids - we HAVE to find a way to get in on them and get mentioned
see the link to the Sun Times article above...

Do we have a closer on our staff? It's that simple. You either can sell the school or you can't and having good basketball players sign up for your team is 1/2 the battle of creating a winning program. It can be done! No excuses!

I don't think we tried to sell the program to Peters. I think they made the judgement that they liked other players better than him. I am fine with that, that is our coaches job. I thought he looked like a good prospect, but they know their style better than I do.

My question was a general question not necessarily for Peters. Some coaches are not great sales guys so they find an assistant that can sell. Selling is about relationship building and being creative in a competitive market to be able to win.

No problem I was not very clear in my first statement. I'm just getting a bit antsy about next year's incoming recruits. I wanted to see something special by next season but at this pace I'm not betting on it unless there's something in the works none of us know.
