Bradley's All Time Roster

tornado

New member
I ran across this web site where the guy is formulating the All Time Roster for every school in the Top 80 teams in the NCAA - he picks them...

Here's what he comes up with for Bradley in a post from just a couple days ago...he includes Sammy!
http://www.operationsports.com/foru...s-ch2k8-alumni-rosters-29.html#post2043807688

He doesn't have a lot of players from before the 1960's, and this is all being posted in the message board thread that's already nearly 30 PAGES LONG - so he's done a large number of D-I teams

Starters
PG-#15 Jim Les-5'11 165 (Sr)
SG-# 33 Hersey Hawkins-6'3 190 (Sr)
SF-#45 Roger Phegley-6'6 205 (Sr)
PF-#25 Chet Walker-6'6 225 (Sr)
C-#31 Joe Allen-6'6 225 (Sr)

Bench
PG-#2 Anthony Manuel-5'11 177 (Sr)
PG-#4 Rob Dye-6'1 190 (Jr)
PG-#5 Sam Maniscalco-6'0 175 (Fr)
SG-#22 Levern Tart-6'3 195 (Sr)
SG-#24 Anthony Parker-6'6 210 (Jr)
SG-#14 Andrew Warren-6'5 194 (Fr)
SF-#44 David Thirdkill-6'7 195 (Sr)
SF-#35 Marcellus Sommerville-6'7 225 (So)
SF-#12 Theron Wilson-6'5 190 (Fr)
PF-#11 Mitchell "J.J." Anderson-6'8 195 (Sr)
C-#13 Patrick O'Bryant-7'0 249 (So)

Here's more...
http://www.operationsports.com/foru...s/417761-playmakers-ch2k8-alumni-rosters.html

and a more cursory review of all the Valley teams from a year ago, but he still includes only Bradley, Wichita, and Indiana State...as being the most significant in NCAA history.

Indiana State

For a non-BU fan, that is a pretty good list IMO. Maybe throw in Squeaky and a tweak here or there, but overall a decent job.

t---This guy is really off base and clearly doesn't know much about Bradley Basketball judging by his selections.
How in the world could anyone include Rob Dye, Sam Maniscalco, or Anthony Manual and exclude Bobby Joe Mason ( Who Chas. Orsborn said was the best player he ever coached) or Steve Kuberski?
Roger Phegley was a great player but should never have been ahead of Anthony Parker or Mitchell Anderson.
And while Theron Wilson and Andrew Warren were very good players, they were'nt in the same league as L.C. Bowen.
And finally, where is Voice Winters in this Roster?

I read many of the guy's posts and I agree - he obviously does not know about all the teams that he is picking All Time Rosters for -- but uses things like their HOF, and their career stat leaders...etc...

BUT -- using the stats would mean older players like Bobby Joe, and players who leave early like Kuberski would get left out..
I know there'd be a lot of disagreement with the guy but I threw it up there for discussion purposes.

t---This was an interesting post. While I disagree with some of his picks, its fun to think about who our all-time best players were.

It might be fun to ask BU fans to post who their choices would be and see what the consensus is.

Too many great players have came through the Hilltop. Easy to forget many of the names we haven't thought of in awhile.

Great points wiz, I thought the same. Would Paul Unruh make your list?

Dating myself ... BARNEY CABLE! Poor ol' Barn never seems to get mentioned as one of BU's all-time greats.

Great points! I very much agree. I have seen a lot of these lists from different sports and am amazed how they rank some of the recent players so high. IMO, Mason or Melchiorre should be on the starting team ahead of Les. JJ Anderson should be on the starting team ahead of Phegley. I doubt the author has ever heard of Voise Winters.

I am surprised that Maniscalco even made the list! SM would not have been on my list. If I were to include a recent guard, it would have been Daniel Ruffin! On a separate note, I think I would also have found a spot on the bench for Donald Reese!

Interesting comment B4L. The game has changed so much over the years.

Reese may quite possibly be one of BU's most under-appreciated players ever due to playing with such high profile teammates. I agree Ben that Reese may be the second best center in BU history.

B4L---You are 1000% correct! Paul Unruh should have benn on the list since he was probably in the same class as Hersey and Walker. Also, Melchiorre and Barny Cable should have been on it. Rob Dye, Maniscalco, and Anthony Manual were not even close to these guys and should never have been included.

I think it is almost impossible to limit the list to 10 players so here is my list which is the top 15. Try to pick the top ten from these guys!
Hersey
Walker
Bobby Jo Mason
Mitchell Anderson
Anthony Parker
Joe Allen
Steve Kuberski
Jim Les
Paul Unruh
Melchiorre
Barney Cable
Roger Phegley
L.C.Bowen
Thirdkill
P. O'brien

I hate lists like this. Over the years there have been many players I have enjoyed watching perform for the Braves. Wouldn't want to leave out any of them. IMO, Anthony Manual is one Bradley's all time great point guards. Shellie McMillan belongs in the same category as Barney Cable. Ernie Thompson was one of the most entertaining players ever for the Braves. I could go on and on, but ----.

It is interesting to discuss but since, as time goes on, there are fewer and fewer people who ever saw or even knew about the older players....
like Unruh, Squeaky, Bobby Joe, Gene Morse, Chet Walker, McMillon, Cable, Joe Allen, etc...it might well be that talk like this on message boards may be all we have of what the fans thought of those old timers......

In fact - I just ran across this old discussion we had a couple years ago on BU's Willie Betts...

I also just ran across this guy who is in the news currently as a coach...and he's a great footballer at
Bradley who also was a two-sport athlete that played BASKETBALL as well...
Bob Caress...

Anthony Manual set a record his junior season that likely will never be broken at Bradley. He averaged 12.0 assists per game, and had 373 assists in a single season, 1987-88! That average ranks 2nd all time to Avery Johnson, who happened to put up 399 assists and an average of 13.3 the same season (1987-88) for Southern Univ.
He also holds the single game BU record of 21 assists in one game (12/19/87 vs. UC-Irvine), which is one short of the NCAA single-game record.

isn't it a weird coincidence that Bradley's all time scoring records were set in 1987-88 and that very same season Anthony Manuel set the all time assist records!!

but you know - now that the basketball program no longer puts out a yearbook or media guide, these facts about the history and the older players from Bradley will be scarcer to find.

That's why I have kept the final press guide.
