Currently the U18 FIBA America Championships are going on...

As was expected the #1 ranked USA team is dominating and they play for the title today...they've had almost exclusively 50+ pt blowout wins
BUT there are a few MVC connections...

The Canadian U18 team is ranked 5th in the world and has done pretty well and will be playing for 3rd place today.
One of ISU's recruits Kaza Keane is playing for the Canadian U18 team.

In Game 1 - Canada won 77-51 over Puerto Rico, Keane played nearly half the game, was 0-3, and 0-2 from 3pt, had 1 pt, 3 rebs, 3 asst, 2 TO
In Game 2 - Canada won 98-67 over Columbia, Keane again played a fair amount and was 0-3, zero pts, 1 reb, 1 asst, 2 TO
In Game 3 - Canada won 76-68 over Argentine, Keane had 3 pt, 2 rebs, 1 asst.
Canada went 3-0 to win Pool B and play in the semi's

In the semifinals, Canada lost to Brazil 66-62, Keane had zero pt, 2 rebs, zero asst, and a TO
Thus far in 4 games, Keane is averaging 1 ppg, shooting only 11% from the field and only 25% from 3-pt, 2 rpg, 1.2 apg...
Canada now plays today for 3rd place vs. Argentina.
He's not scoring much or shooting well but the experience will certainly help him and be enjoyable.

One other MVC connection - prior BU recruit Sam Dekker is playing for the USA squad - but he doesn't play much and even tho all the games have been blowout wins, Sam is averaging 4 ppg with no assists.

The U17 teams will be playing for the World Championships next week in Lithuania...
Several familiar players are on the USA U17 team - Jabari Parker, Kendrick Nunn, Jahlil Okafor

The Canadian U17 team has Shayok Shayok's younger brother Marial Shayok.

Also in Chaco, Argentina, the Men's South American Championships are being played -
Creighton's Greg Echenique is playing for the Venezuelan Men's Team along with Maryland's Greivis Vazquez
Echenique had 12 pts, 4 rebs in Venezuela's 90-87 loss to Argentina in the first round, and earlier Venezueal beat Chile 86-61 with Echenique scoring 3 pts, and grabbing 4 rebs.
Venezuela just came back this morning and is playing Columbia.
Here's a couple stories on Greg Echenique and the Venezuelan team.
Gregory Echenique returns to the Venezuela National Team, looking to to earn a trip to this summer's Olympics in London.

In the Centrobasket Central America Playoffs - Puerto Rico's team has Angel Garcia - who once played for Memphis...he scored 2 pts in PR's big win over Bahamas. Ex-Mavs' Jose Barea is averaging double digit assists for PR.
Ex-Brave Jason Faulknor played for Jamaica a couple years ago in this competition.

          More scores

          Croatia 124 - Egypt 68
          Spain 93 - Lithuania 83

and an incredibly exciting and close game between Canada & Argentina - going right down to the wire...

Canada trailed with just over 3 min to go 67-66
then the teams traded baskets and FT for the next three minutes...
with 24 seconds to go Canada was up 74-73, then the final 24 seconds went on foreve with FT's being shot and the Final is...
          Canada 80 - Argentina 76

Marial Shayok AGAIN is among the leaders - with 15 points, 8 rebs (led team), 4 asst (led team)...

            More games today...

Spain clobbers Canada 83-62, and again Marial Shayok is the only Canadian that seems able to play at this level..17 pts, 6 rebs -

            China 71 - Czech Republic 68
            Argentina 106 - Korea 59
            Australia 88 - Egypt 73
Croatia 73 - Lithuania 68 with a minute to go
USA then plays France - the French have played poorly and beaten only the Egyptians - losing to China & Czech Republic...and sit 9th in the standings out of 12 teams.

The USA has outscored opponents in their 3 games 295-197
Croatia is also undefeated thus far and now move to 4-0

Here's one interesting stat - despite the USA dominance - not one USA player is among the top 10 scorers (Marial Shayok ranks 10th at 15ppg).
Okafor ranks 8th in rpg, but again the USA team splits their playing time so evenly that no player racks up eye-popping numbers.
Two USA players are among the 3-pt shooting leaders - Conner Frankamp (4-6) and Steven Domingo (9-16), and both Jabari Parker & Okafor are shooting well above 50% from the floor.
And as might be guessed - the leader on the USA team in minutes played sits at 22 mpg, which is 49th among the players at this tourney!
