More talk on moving the MVC Tourney to Kansas City - Doug Elgin sounds as if he likes the idea....

As long as we continue to play (and lose) on Thursday, I don't care where they hold it. If we are a contender, I'll fly across the country to witness it live. Based on the number of people I saw in the stands watching the game last Thursday, the vast majority agree with me.

Shockers may demand the move for the sake of their fans or threaten to look elsewhere, but it would be a disaster for 8 of the other MVC teams and would drop attendance a bunch -

The current contract the MVC signed with St. Louis expires after next year's tournament. Every time this contract comes up for renewal, this kind of talk resurfaces. I believe it is nothing more than posturing by Elgin to position the MVC to get a better deal from St. Louis for the next contract. Note that this thread started back when Elgin signed the last contract extension with St. Louis.
He would be nuts to move from St. Louis, and I don't see it happening. The MVC home offices are in St. Louis, and it is much more centrally located for all the MVC schools than Kansas City, especially now that Creighton is no longer in the MVC. The only school that would seem to benefit much would be Wichita State, and they had no trouble bringing 8-9,000 fans to St. Louis.

KC is technically closer for 4 of the 10 teams, so I don't think it would be a disaster for 8.

Some would argue that many of the schools that it would increase distance for don't bring much in the way of attendance anyway, so it wouldn't have much of an impact there. It would definitely increase attendance from WSU and may increase MSU and the two Iowa schools.

I doubt it ever leaves, but I expect KC's bid to be more competitive this time around and going forward so STL will have to step up to secure it. Personally, I've gone to Arch Madness 8 times or so. I enjoy the basketball, but dislike the city. I know a lot of people feel the same and one reason myself and others have stopped going. I know others love it. KC, in my opinion, is a better setting for the overall experience regardless of distance. And there's a hell of a lot more action around Sprint than there is Scottrade or whatever they're calling it this year.

As far as WSU attendance this year, the numbers I've see had us around 4500 on Friday, 5500 on Saturday and 7500 on Sunday. And I'm not going to lie, if this would have been in KC I'm guessing there'd have been at least 10k there for Sunday. Perhaps that's one reason they wouldn't want to move it to KC though.

Be careful when you say you don't see something happening. 19 or 20 years ago I told a lot of people the state tournament would NEVER leave the Assembly Hall. Boy was I wrong. like it in Peoria but so happy I got to work my 3 tournaments in the Hall. Great experience walking out of that tunnel. Hope the Valley stays in St. L. but would never bet on it. Money talks.

Didn't the Champaign hotels and motels jacking up prices and refusing to cooperate with state tournament officials have a lot to do with the IHSA moving it? Peoria is still somewhat convenient for all parts of the state.
The MVC moving to Kansas City would hurt attendance, IMO, and I just don't see it happening. It is extremely successful in St. Louis, and I hope it stays there. I think this is all a bargaining chip Elgin wants to negotiate a better deal with St. Louis.
