Jonathan Matthew Guthrie was born eleven weeks early on January 14, 2012 and has spent the first 4+ months of his life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the OSF Children??™s Hospital. He was an IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) baby, due to a problem with the placenta getting oxygen and nutrients to him. Jonathan weighed just 13 ?? ounces and was only 9 ????? long. He has overcome so many obstacles that have been put in front of him and is now up to 6 pounds and 17??? long. We are extremely lucky to have the OSF Children??™s Hospital right here in Peoria and we personally owe a lifetime of gratitude to the entire staff in the NICU!

Other than the day Jonathan is finally able to come home, I am very much looking forward to giving back a little by volunteering for telethons and other events throughout the year, for many years to come.

The first of my volunteer efforts will be answering phones during the Children??™s Miracle Network Telethon on Sunday, June 3. As a volunteer, I am asked to raise $500 prior to the telethon. I??™m asking that you please visit Jonathan??™s page to read his story and watch the slideshow. You are able to donate right there from his page by clicking the ???Support Me!??? button . I also have pledge forms if you would rather make a cash or check donation, just send me a private message here and we can set something up. This is extremely important to us and I'm serious when I say even $5 is greatly appreciated, because if everyone we know did that much, we'd be very satisfied with the results!

Thank you!

Shaun Guthrie

BradleyFans is happy to promote such a great cause. Anyone who can help the Children's Miracle Network, please consider donating.

I encourage anybody who hasn't clicked on the link to do so...Jonathan's story is simply incredible. The Children's Hospital of Illinois has one of the country's premier NICU's, and we are fortunate to live in a city that has such a first class facility and doctors/medical staff. If you haven't donated before, Shaun has made it very easy to do so...just click the link above and input your information and credit card.

Best wishes to Shaun, his wife and little Jonathan!

Thanks for the comments and wishes!

I couldn't agree more with what you've stated here. I was aware of the fancy new building OSF was building and had no doubt it was a really nice place for children to make the most of their stay at the hospital. What I could not imagine was the level of care going on behind those brand new walls, just in the NICU alone. I can now fully appreciate just how lucky we are to have such a facility and talented staff working right here in Peoria! I cannot stress this enough.....Jonathan was a very tiny, sick baby who was given very little chance to even be born alive as small as he was. We were worried he wouldn't be developed enough. If he was able to survive the stress of being taken from mother's womb, would they have the equipment small enough to help him along? Jonathan has overcome many obstacles because of the knowledge of the six Neonatologists who have each had a hand in Jonathan's care, the truly caring personalities of the nursing staff, and every other person working there from the front desk to the housekeeper who asks us about Jonathan every day. The one word I always find myself coming back to when describing the NICU is "amazing"!

Tying this all together with Bradleyfans.com, I've been informed that some folks from the athletic department will be working the phones for CHOI, including an administrator and some coaches.

Just wanted to bump this thread one more time- the Children's Miracle Network telethon is on WEEK channel 25 today from 10 am to 5 pm, if anyone is able to support in any way. Watch for shaunguth manning the phones!

Congratulations to shaunguth and to everyone else who contributed their time or donations to support the Children's Hospital of Illinois.
Their goal was to exceed last year's telethon total of nearly $2.5 million raised. And they were extremely successful, raising $3,573,918.

Classy move by all who participated and donated. This makes me proud to be a Brave!

DC -- job well done on allowing this great cause to be promoted on the site!

Shaun -- good luck, brother! God Bless!

Joe

This year's telethon was a huge success! It was was great to see President Glasser, Dr. Cross, Coach Hayes, and Coach Dominquez all working the phones to raise money for CHOI.

I just wanted to make a few comments....and thanks to Shaun for making this a topic on BradleyFans as our family has always had interest & desire to see kids get the help they need...

First - this year's efforts raised over $3.5 million - way more than in prior years....what a tremendous blessing and hopefully that support can help a lot of kids

2nd- I have always, always appreciated how generous and giving some people are, and this year's CMN confirms that.....
Remember the Race for the Cure??? They had literally TENS of thousands of people involved, got 100 times more coverage in the media and free publicity, get nationwide support & sympathy from other groups and activists, and have the benefit of being the politically correct charity nowadays...and yet...
with their 30,000 participants - still raised just over $1 million...or only about $4 per person per hour spent. They'd have raised way more money going to work those hours and giving half their salary!

CMN - had only a fraction of the participants, got far less coverage or publicity, and yet received the gifts and pledges amounting to almost four times the giving!
Wow is all I can say - it shows that if people do something to help others, especially helpless others, then something good will come from it.

Last - it just shows that caring for others isn't scarce......in a world where we see an awful lot of caring for self...
Studies prove that Americans give charitably in rates up to 5 times, 10 times, and even 20 times more than people even in the MOST developed and wealthy nations of Europe.
And although giving in middle eastern and far eastern societies is significant coming from wealthy oil people - it does NOT go to those who are needy - but instead goes to militant sources!

I want to applaud those whose efforts are helping the kids like Jonathan Matthew!

I don't mind sharing Jonathan's story at all! These are the stories that need to be told in order for people to get just a little glimpse of what is capable of happening right here in Peoria. There are 64 rooms in the NICU and they are full at times. There are many different situations from babies that just need to grow and learn how to feed......to the more extreme cases like Jonathan and other situations that keep babies there for an extended amount of time.

I had a good time spending the day at the CMN Telethon. It was very emotional to watch (especially the first hour, which focused on the NICU) and extremely gratifying to help raise money for one of the best facilities in the country! I look forward to many more years of doing whatever I can to help this cause that has overtaken our lives. It's actually kind of sad that it does take such a life-altering event to open one's eyes to such a cause and facility that is right here in my hometown.

Jonathan had a few different surgical procedures done on June 1 and it took him awhile to recover, but he came back off the ventilator on June 5. He really has been a different baby since recovering from surgery. He seems so much happier now and doesn't appear to be the "sick" baby he was. Of course, his lungs are his biggest issue and they will be for some time, but he has overcome so many other things. His oxygen level is back down to the lowest it ever was and we're going to be very busy over the next couple days with meetings, appointments, and training to prepare us for him coming home. Right now, the plan is to bring him home this Thursday, which will be his 5-month birthday!

Thanks again to BradleyFans for allowing this subject to be discussed here!

I'm closely connected to the CHOI Foundation on a personal level, so I love to hear your story of gratitude Shaun.

I will again be spending the day at the Children's Hospital Telethon tomorrow. If anyone would like to donate on behalf of Jonathan, please visit his page....

Let me repeat what I said last year....
This is extremely important to us and I'm serious when I say even $5 is greatly appreciated, because if everyone we know did that much, we'd be very satisfied with the results!

Jonathan is doing good right now and has only spent a week in the hospital this year. Last year, he was in the hospital a total of nine months!

However, a lot has happened since this time last year, including some new complications that were discovered not long after he came home from the NICU. This is all detailed at the above address.

Since my efforts were focused on the NICU last year, I would greatly appreciate this years' support going towards the Congenital Heart Center.

Thanks so much for your support!

Thanks to the great people at the Children's hospital, and the great volunteers and donors! I am glad to hear Jonathan is doing OK! Good luck Shaun!

Tomorrow's telethon airs from Noon to 5 PM on WEEK. Once again this year, there will be folks from the Bradley athletic department participating.
