  • Report from Trusted Choice Tournament of Champions

Saw two games this morning and am going to catch the Boys to Men game later this afternoon.

First game, Washington, IL vs Kansas City Winnetonka, MO
Washington has Matt Roth and KC has Jarryd Cole 6'7" PF going to Iowa.

Cole is huge, looks like a line backer, but isn't very mobile and can't shoot.
Matt Roth can shoot the lights out and hit from everywhere inside the center circle.
Roth with 24, final score Washington 57 - KC Minnetonka 31.
Roth had 27 last night and has the best shot of anyone I have seen in a while. BU's just gotta et him!
He even blocked one of Cole's shots.
Sean Johnson also shot well, and Washington center Jackson Scott defended well against a much bigger guy.
Chuck Buescher, Tony Wy, and ICC's Matt Nicholson were watching.

Next game Decatur Christian vs. Houston TX Klein Forest.
BU recruit Anthony Thompson, very skinny, but a fine player.
He was hampered by foul trouble trying to guard Hamga, but still had 7 pt, 5 reb, 2 blk, 3 stl, and almost all of those stats were before half.
He was ineffective after the half because of fouls.
Decatur Christian is full of kids that look 22-23 years old.
Beas Hamga, huge, 7-footer, and developed as much as just about any NBA player. He is a superstud and Iowa is getting a good one.
Wonder how any of these kids can get eligible since none of them have ever gone to high school in the US before.
That's why Decatur christian ian't IHSA eligible.
Hamga had at least half their points, but they also had a couple good outside shooters.
Lucca Staiger is obviously a little older than most high schoolers, very well developed, but only had 2 baskets that I saw. He is a good player, but again, clearly a bit older than the high schoolers, and since nobody shot much other than Hamga, couldn't really tell how good some of the others were.
Darrington Hobson (Top 100 kid and unsigned) was in street clothes, either injury or ineligible.
This game was dominated by fouls, and Klein Forest's other stud, Alonzo Edwards also was pretty ineffective.
Decatur won by over 20, Hamga dominated but it was like a college team against a high school team.
Klein actually didn't do bad, but Decatur prep just did better...
    sort of bigger, stronger, faster..

Matt Roth hit a couple 3's from the Y on the Bradley half court sign! It would be huge for him to come to the Braves! Fans from Washington say he wants to go to illinois? Not sure how much they know......my sources say he is close to the Braves.......either way he's a fine shooter!

Anthony Thompson has a big future ahead of him...looked pretty good in the 1st half....seems to only use one move in the post and it started getting blocked by the 7' kid today.....runs the floor very well though....needs to gain some weight and strength......a summer on the Hilltop will serve him well!

Chuck Buescher was on hand to watch the games this morning and he either has to drive fast or has a flight back to Hoffman Estates for the Big Bradley Game tonight!

I saw you there Mike, you were leaving about the same time I was,

I have a report from the Fieldhouse...
Humble TX Christian vs. Chicago Boys to Men

Everyone on BTMA looks 22 years old, too,
Mac Koshwal is built, but can't seem to hit his shot sometimes.
PG Jememiah Kelly from BTMA looked very good.

Everyone on the Humble TX roster was greatly exaggerated in the program where their height was listed.
DeAndre Jordan was listed as 7-0 but was 2" taller than Mac Koshwal, and about 2" shorter than Clay Holloway who is 7-0.
so I'd say Jordan was 6-10.
They also had a SG named Fenington who was listed at 6-9 but was very athletic, a fine player but at least 1-2 inches shorter than Koshwal.

Leon Freeman didn't play but the one guy I was impressed the most by was Jelani Poston.
Very muscular, strong, quick, and looks a bit like Cellus, maybe about 6'-5".

I've been trying to tell you guys about Matt and his incredible range.....now maybe you'll start believing me!

Matt had 14 pts. and 8 rbs. in his final game Saturday night, a 64-56 loss to a team from Arkansas.

          Some DCS Corrections

I am a DCS graduate and close to the program. I was at both hames this weekend in Peoria. Here are a couple of facts.

          1. All the players are correct IHSA age. DCS has to follow this rule in order to keep aproval status. oldest player on the team is Mario Stula #52. He just turned 19 a few days ago.

Staiger is only 18 years old. He works very hard in the weightroom however. Hamga is only 17 and is still very skinny. 7' and about 220lbs. He is only a junior.

DCS was without their starting PG Darrington Hobson and Duro Bejegovic a 6'8 4 man who is their leading scorer. Bradley has had some interest in bopth of them. More Duro than Hobson. At this point, I don't think either of them has an offer.

Thanks....I was only going on what I saw and the response when asking a couple of the DCS fans.
I did not say that there were any irregularities, only the appearance of a huge difference between the DCS and the Klein Forest players.
If Hamga and Staiger are both only juniors, then they not only work hard with the weights, they are extremely gifted with excessively mature bodies for their age.

First, most high school juniors are still only 16 early in their 11th grade year, so the fact that you are conceding 18 is still a little suspicious....it means that they are still two years older than most kids at the junior-level of high school.

One other comment that I have is drawn from the experience that I have seen with Mac Koshwal, Thijin Moses, and a few others.
Koshwal is still in his "senior" year at Boys to Men but it is well known that he is going to be AT LEAST 22 1/2 years old before he finishes his senior year.
But as this article relates, how can anyone believe some of the claims of the kid's age when he doesn't have any really believable records, plus they have made clear and intentional efforts to misrepresent their age.

The players who come from foreign countries often have some difficulties coming up with the same kind of evidence that all USA-born high schoolers have routinely on file at their schools for the past 12 years.
When these kids come with no American transcripts and school records, then you'd have to agree, suspicion is warranted.
If I needed to give even more evidence, how about the name Danny Almonte...ever heard of him?

By the way, I did a little digging, and found something interesting, and I'd sure like any explanation you can offer.
Many of the foreign players and athletes going as far back as the East Germans of the 1970's have done an incredible and organized job of hiding and misrepresenting their ages.
It is still going on today, in case you don't know...

I found a link to a page on Eurobasket, that names 2006 as the Class that Beas Hamga is in.
This page lists kids like Spencer Hawes (already graduated and at University of Washington), Hamady N'Diaye (already graduated & BU just played against on Rutgers), Ramar Smith, David Sanchez, and others, so it does have to raise suspicion.

I also found a reference to Lucca Staiger being 20 years old in Dec. 2005.

All I can say is that I don't have proof of age falsification, but I believe my eyes that all the starters on DCS LOOKED substantially older than the other kids on the floor, and what you're saying doesn't do much to dispel my suspicions.

As for Mario Stula, he was playing as a SIXTEEN year old in 2002, and was playing in a Croatian pro league in 2004-2005, and 2005-2006.

I have no problem believing Joel Johnson is a high schooler, I just don't buy that those other guys are when so much in the way of college rides and potential pro monies hang on this kind of thing.

I agree with Tornados assestment of Decatur Christian, those kids had "college bodies" not High School. I looked at Washingtons and Notre Dames bodies. Their was a huge difference.
Anthony Thompson needs a LOT of work!

Thanks for the independent observations, but we all know that Decatur Christian has two different teams.
One of the teams has real high schoolers and plays against other IHSA teams.
The team with Hamga goes all over the country and travels to the top HS and Prep School tourneys.

If someone really wants to answer the tough questions...then I have three....
--where is the documentation of the kids' ages?
--what happened to all the other foreign players who were listed just two months ago on this roster but now are gone?
There were five other kids on the roster 6-9 and taller, and they are no longer listed.

--and who pays the costs of all the travel and the education costs of the African and croatian kids? I won't buy it if you say the kids come over the the US with loads of $$, and the overall costs have to run into the tens of thousands

                    1. I wouldn't have access to the kids age documentation. I suppose they all could have fake passports and transcripts. All I know is both of these documents are required for DCS admission. At some point you have to trust that kids are telling the truth.

Other tall players missing. One was too old. He turned 20 this coming winter. He is at a prep school on the east coast.

One Kid's english wasn't very good. He was sent to a school in Alabama with an ESL (enslish as Second Language) program.

Two were denied a student visa out of africa. It is very difficult to obtain a student visa from Africa because of the terrible financial situation. Students must prove to Imigration Services that they are financially capable of sustaining themselves in the US.

Financial costs. kids stay with Hosts families at no cost. They are responsible for their own travel to the US. Tuiton assistance is available to most of the kids but they all pay something for school.

They only travel regionally (1 long trip to the east coast) and 90% of the travel is covered by the tounrament or event they are attending.

FYI. Croatian pro league is so small time that the NCAA allows players to play "club ball" with them.

                        Post of the Day!

It has been such a quiet day coming off the loss to Illinois. We needed a little comic relief. Thanks B4L.

Although they acknowledge that there are parts to his game (ball handling, getting to the basket) that need improvement, his outside shooting prowess is what makes him an attractive recruiting target.

And it appears BU is the leader for his services.....

Oh NO!! They suggest Northwestern is about to offer Matt Roth.
Can anyone recall the last time Northwestern got an NCAA bid?
