I guess I am confused as to what the term "severance" means in the PJS article...I suppose anyone can sign any agreement that says anything if they want to...so maybe WM's "severance" package prevented him from working for six months but it is unusual to agree not to work elsewhere for such a length of time -
If his agreement prevented him from working elsewhere it would not really be a typical severance package -
It would be like what happened to Coach Molinari - it would be that he opted not to take the buyout or severance package - thus he'd still be contractually prevented from taking another job without permission from the University.
I have paid "severance" packages to employees many times - - some virtually nothing, some 2-weeks and others 1 or 2-months --
but a "severance package" is exactly what it says -- it severs the relationship so that as soon as the person accepts the severance package they are free to go anywhere they want and work or lay around or do anything they choose to do.
Even the US Department of Labor's definition of a severance package or severance agreement states that it willingly ends the relationship so that the employee cannot ask for more pay and also allows him to be free to seek new employment.

This is a misstatement. The NCAA only allows D1 schools to have 1 head coach and 3 assistant coaches. So if Kansas State intends to hire McClain as a "fourth full-time assistant coach", then they will be in violation of the rules.
The position McClain will hold is a non-coaching, non-recruiting administrative position, created just to allow Coach Weber to hire his friend.
Big schools with unlimited financial resources do these kinds of things all the time. Schools like Kentucky have numerous full time and part time personal assistants, and even assistants to the assistants. AAU coaches or high school coaches and even recruits' family members have been hired by the big boys as a reward for their help in recruiting players.

At the time, Sypher was married to Tim Sypher who was described as Pitino's long time personal assistant and chauffer. He still has a nice job courtesy of Pitino.
But Pitino has, for a long time, had a number of full time paid "personal assistants".
Here is a real interesting Sports Illustrated story about Pitino and how he operates. It focuses on another mysterious personal assistant/gatekeeper named Vinny Tatum-
