  • Job #1 at SMU for Larry Brown & Tim Jankovich...

will be to run players off and get new ones -
This story is totally shameful - I hope recruits see this stuff....
..one current player says the VERY first thing Larry Brown told him was that he wasn't good enough to play for him...

The SMU AD says players can be off the team and remain at the school on scholarships?

Larry Brown has not been that removed from HS ball and college. While retired he was out helping a few HS coaches and college coaches out. I'm sure he has a few recruits in mind! He has the pedigree to recruit the top players and Calipari and the rest be ****ed. Jank made a solid play IMO.

This happens at BU every year, they are just more honest about it here. I don't like it, but lets call a spade a spade. See: Donivine, Devon, Darian Norris, et al.

Remember that SMU can do whatever it wants. This school has big money donors and alumni and always has. Name 1 other school with ZERO basketball tradition, hell, name a school WITH tradition that could put together the coaching staff that they have in the past 2 months. You think they aren't gonna get the players? This is Southern Methodist at it's finest.

Do you think they hired him to be just another basketball team? Sorry, but that's how you build a program.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

It is a ruthless way to run a program, but I suspect Brown knows he isn't going to be the head coach for long, so he has to move quickly.
With all the programs leaving (Pitt, Syracuse, West Virginia) and all the programs being added (Memphis, Central Florida, Houston, SMU, Navy, San Diego State and Boise State- some just for football) I have lost track how many teams the Big East will have each of the next few years for basketball, but I still do not see SMU, a program with no significant basketball tradition, no recent success, and in abysmal shape, finishing above the bottom couple teams in Larry Brown's lifetime.

I disagree -- players at BU are told honestly where they stand and are given the option of leaving....I have personally talked with several who have left and none have ever hinted anything like what the kids at SMU are saying.
I know for a fact that no BU player has ever been told he had to leave when he wanted to stay.
So you are free to believe what you want - but those three examples you gave are not the same. They were not forced out and were not unhappy about the situation and circumstances, and all 3 thanked the coaches and Bradley.

As proof - note all the other times after a BU player has left - like the three you named, plus Eddren, and others, they are cited in the press as saying really nice things and thanking all at BU for the opportunity.
This is not what we see here at SMU - we see players who haven't even had a chance to play for the new coach but being told to get the heck out.
And the TCS case was totally misreported by the local press using as their "facts" - only what TCS and his dad claimed, and yet time proved their claims false.
TCS' dad readily conceded later there was no "text message"...
Even TCS himself called back to the PJS and asked that they correct the misstatements and lies that were published without fact-checking... LINK...

BTW -- the PJS and their writers never apologized to Coach Les or to BU for lying and reporting incorrect facts - which were very negative and damaging..
If there's anyone remaining who actually thinks the PJS treated JL fairly or the same as they treat other coaches, then I doubt any further facts will ever change your mind.

What is more honest than, you are not good enough to play for me? Outrage over a coach doing his job? Strange

There are different ways to do your job....I'm not bashing Coach Brown but his bluntness is one trait that could be called into question.

Get mad at him for being blunt, but the practice he is engaging happens at BU all the time, maybe we're more polite, and tell the kid he can stay on the team, but we are hoping against all hope and hinting like mad for the guy to leave so we can recruit someone to take his spot. It's common practice and horendous, but it's done everywhere. IMO, kids have to sit out a year to transfer, so if a kid transfers you should have to wait a year to use the scholly (a kid could be on scholarship but not play though)... I know it could really hurt if a player chooses to leave on his own, but the one year rule for the player is arguably the same thing when he is forced out...

You make a great point amckillip! The NCAA needs to do a better job of being an advocate for the student-athlete... Unfortunately, this will probably never happen.

                            Here are a couple observations

Brown immediately sent four players packing and "cut them" even before he had seen them play..how some people can equate that with Donivine being sent packing is beyond me...
he never saw these guys play...

One of the four was a starter who was among the returning best scorers and was also among the Conference leaders in assists and best ASSIST TO TURNOVER RATIO

one other player who barely played still got nearly 4 rebs a game -

then he goes for Head who gets 1 ppg, 1 apg, & 0.6 rpg

Larry Brown & Jank getting it done..
they hosted five top ranked players this week on visits...
Two are 5-Star rated, and one is a 4-Star recruit (per Rivals)
